50 Instead of 55 Profile Tyres
« on: 29 March 2007, 13:33:58 »

All, I have an urgent one here:

Will putting 50 profile tyres on 16" wheels cause MOT failure?  There were 2 wheels with 50 profile on when I bought them, and as they were cheaper I got them instead of 55's..

This is urgent, fitting station are ready for me now..

Many thanks in advance,

Chris.

As long as you don't mix different sizes and they're not obviously wrong for the car I don't think you'll have a problem.

Speedo calibration will go out slightly...

Incidentally, have a look at the manual at http://www.motuk.co.uk and see what the requirements are wrt tyres.

.. and you can actually mix tyres of different aspect ratio, just not on the same axle, however, you may well get an ABS / TC light on if the system detects a difference in tyre diameter.

Chris, You may also have insurance problems in the case of an accident if you use an unapproved size/profile/rating.

Cheers

The "fitting station" should be more than aware of any legislation reguarding tyres. It's their job >:(

If you do decide to fit 50's, have a look here:

All sorted, thanks guys - 2.5% faster according to that STMO, so 60mph on the speedo is actually 58.5mph in reality..

Gone from 205x65x15 to 225x50x16.

Thanks again guys, I'll post some pics when I've finished fitting them and have refinished the centre caps..

i believe the legal limit of speedo difference is 2.5%, which would suggest you're legal!

were your original 15" wheels factory standard?
