Hi I changes my front pad Jan and saw that my back disks were pitted so have changed them with new disks, pads and handbrake shoes. I have a problem that sometimes when I brake I get a hard pedal, take my foot off and it is ok again. this does not happen every day. I went round and made sure I had no air in the lines Sunday and all seemed ok then bag it is back today went to brake and hard pedal next to no brakes then fine realy good brakes

so any idea what is going on I am not losing any fluid and the level is fine?? :-?

Help before I end up taking it in for a check

I would suspect a servo or vacuum problem, check the vacuum pipe is secure in the servo grommit, pull the vac pipe from the servo and suck on the end...should be no air flow but should be able to blow into it easily...repeat a few times looking for a hint of the non-return valve sticking open.
Cant see that its related to you changing the rear brakes but it is a big coincidence.

It did happen before that is why I started the checks and found the front bads were down then the warning came up so all I have done was needed.
 I will have a look and see if that is the problem I was tols it could be the flex pipe to the front getting old and plowing up but they look good.

i'd agree with matchless sounds like the servo sucking air check the pipe going from the plenum to the servo

It could be that, if you had to pump the pedal to take up the slack after installing the new pads, that the servo piston exceeded the travel that it normally experiences and got leaky. It might be worth having it off and cleaning / replacing it. Almost anything else would cause a spongy pedal.

Only other thing I can think of is if the new pads were very tight in the calipers maybe they were binding on the sides of the calipers.

Hi all thanks for the help I had a look and found that if you pumped the brake and put your foot down hard then turned the car on the pedal should go down if the vacume is ok my foot stayed still.
So a vacume problem I looked and looked and found  
and this
followed by
so off to get a new bit 95p later great brakes.

There is a special separator that yours is missing (or maybe it came in on later models), if you look at the picture below the two bits that are marked with the red arrows actually rotate towards each other and lock to create a fixed separation between the hoses.

No ware in sight it is a 1997 car so may not be there New hoes is fine fitted over back and away from metal.
No all I need to do is fix the washer bottal that started to leak when as you do I filled it up. :-?
