DISASTER - autobox
« on: 03 April 2007, 16:21:33 »

OMG,

Just taken off the second sump on the autobox to find a smashed up plastic ring.  I remember sometime ago someone else had something similar and it seemed very serious.

It seems about 1.5" to 2" in diameter when complete.

Does anyone know what it is and if I can resolve the problem?

Worried,

It was Cornishtaz, and it turned out to be a thrush washer....

Sorry, I have no idea.  I think Cornishtaz's was an old one left after rebuild as it worked fine after removal, but he then sold it.

As you yours, I guess GM fit them for a reason....

I know nothing about autoboxes, sorry.

Knowing my luck, and it is probably like yours, i would not chance it. :o You could drive like that for miles or it will let go at some inconvenient time when it is hissing down. :o :o :'(

Look for a secondhand one, must be one around at a good price what with all the cars being broken at the moment. ;)

I heard Cornishtaz managed to sort it out.  Somewhere on VxON there is the info.  Any help on this would be much appreciated.

As said earlier, Cornishtaz believed his was an old one left from a g/box rebuild done a year earlier.  Once he removed the bits of thrust washer, it seemed to be OK.

Ah so thats how he 'sorted it' I did ask him but he never responded, haven't seen him since then either - did you say he'd sold it? As in the Omega?  That would make sense then..

He sold the Omega and got a Vectra, hence why he left here...

Well the box is back together now,  I only recovered 2 x 1/4 of the thrust washer, so I guess the rest is either still in place or sitting somewhere in the box.

It seems to work ok.  Slightly better than before but still the odd moment which might be the oil just getting to where it should be.  I will chekc the level again tomorrow after a couple of runs.

Just in case I might start looking at getting a refurbed GB, anyone suggest where to look?

From memory Cornishtaz had the gearbox stripped down and rebuilt.  In all honesty, you're better off looking for a replacement autobox.  I got mine from Dave Marshall

His g/box was rebuilt a year ago, from what he said, this time he just removed the bits, and he suspected they were left over from rebuild.
