Project Elite - Camshaft Bearing Caps
« on: 04 April 2007, 20:50:11 »

Concerned I may have got a few mixed up during re-fitting of the camshafts tonight...

Would this have a bad effect? Does it matter which way round they go?

But there all marked up with the positions.....its not a great idea to muddle them as its a line bored assembly so they are pretty unique....you might be ok if it was simply the order on a single camshaft but, between shafts is not a good idea

I noticed they were all marked, L1, R1 etc... the thing is.. they were not in the right places when I stripped it!

Now I've no way of knowing which way they were fitted before...

Balls!!

Just fit as per the head designations.....there are stampings on the head and each cam bearing....match them up.....make sure there is no oil in the bolt holes before fitting to....

Just to avoid me getting this wrong (would be a shame to ruin this rebuild!)

I'm guessing R is for the drivers side head.. and L for the passenger one?
The numbers, 2,3,4,5,6,7 etc.. what order does this follow on each head?

To identify right and left (coz I cant remember!)....look for the cam bearing which holds the cam sensor.......this goes on the passenger side.....see what marking it has and you now know which is left and right.

To determine position, look at the side of the heads, there are small flats in the castings with the numbers stamped into them by each cam bearing cap...

From memory, the cam bearing edge which is marked faces the ouside edge of the head....

So, the sides are easy to find and the positions are all marked up......

Thanks very much Mark... from memory, the cap with the cam sensor on wasn't marked anywhere? I may be wrong...

It will be corrected tomorrow, before rockers covers and belt go on!

James I have heads with camshaft caps in the correct order.

If you want I can check and cofirm the correct number order, even provide pics in the morning.

The engine L/R is opposite to the rest of the car :-?, L/R is as you look at the cambelt cover. (note this is for the bare engine as made in the engine plant, any bits that bolt to it for a particular car installation follow the car notation. ie as seen from the drivers seat.

So the cap with the camsensor is one of the RH ones, 1 or 5, lay them out in sequence and you should be able to work it all out.

Just found a pic.

Looking at cambelt cover, the front bearing caps are (from left to right)

L1 L5......R5 R1
