auto box leak,
« on: 02 April 2007, 07:46:07 »

in the intrests of maintaining the omega if its not one thing its another tradition............................ :-[

at work this morning, 0615 outside enjoying my last cup of tea of the night and a sneaky ciggie before the day shift arrived i looked over at my car and spoted a puddle under it.
thats funny i thought, it didnt rain last night, and the local tramp was not around last night.

rolled the car back to find a puddle of nice clean atf fluid.
now theres no puddle outside my house where i park, well ok there will be by now  ::)
but no preious oil marks.
check under the car quick and there is a drip drip of red oil coming from the body of sump pan of the gearbox, couldnt get a clearer veiw than just to make sure the puddle was coming from my car.

so im not going to get to look at it for a few days yet(steeling swmbo's car for the next 2 nights,to get to and from work)

any usual suspects i need to be looking for ?

Well I would check the filler plug first (you can but hope) and then check the most likely culprit ... the output seals (where the propshaft goes into the gearbox).

out put is as dry as a bone.
jacked her up to have a quick look, the oil apears to be coming from the front of the gearbox, front box sump bolts and half way back are wet.rear ones are dry.
checked the sump bolts and they where all a little lose, niped them up just incase. ill take her for a run to work and see the size of the puddle i leave this time. is the level plug on the side of the box,if so it was dry....

I'd check the fluid level before using the car. I hope someone can confirm but I think if it's low you can do terminal damage to the box.

Wipe off all the old fluid and muck then go for a short drive, should be easier to tell where is is leaking from, also check the pipes going to the cooler, could be blowing back from a leak in one of these.

From your description I suspect the leak is from inside the bell housing, either the input shaft seal or the torque convertor - input shaft seals. There are two rubber bungs you can remove at the bottom of the bellhousing, if there is fluid inside the bellhousing then its gearbox off to replace the seals.

My best guess would be from the torque convertor. you can do damage to a gearbox with low oil but imho before then the level would be so low as to no go. :-/

could be good news.
just been out and popped the bung of the bottom of the bell housing,
the inside of the plug was bone dry . don't look like its been leaking into bellhousing,,,,,,

looks like ill have to try and balance the omega up on one ramp with the wheels on full lock to get a proper look tommorow,(my little trolley jack is great for swmbo's clit, but wont lift the beast high enough for me to get under properly, or it could be all those pizza's i eat  ::)

just jacked the car up at work on the ubber jack.didn't see the results of jack posts till after....1.5 tonne lift one side.enough rom to get uber jack past engine and use 1st xmember to raise car up to get axle stands on rails asper jack post.

on the gear box, above the sump is dry. looks like the sump gasket has failed at the front.here is a constant drip from the drivers side outer most front sump bolt.

at which point some one turns up to colect a vehicle from the workshops, nice ofsomeone to warn me lol,so had to get car back on floor and 3 other vehicles out I was blocking in..
didn't have time to check on pipes.the inside of the bell housing is bone dry looking through inspection hole.
the pipes from gear boc have a little oil on them but only at the metal p clip thing in front of the box.no oil at unions on box or further towards front of engine.

once its home its getting parked up till I resolve it now.
