Is it crank sensor?
« on: 10 April 2007, 14:41:11 »

In the 2.0 GLS, Just had to nip into work, 9 mile run. A vectra came close behind me, so I booted it.

Got to 4,000 rpm, sudden jerk, and EML came on. The car won't rev over 4,000 RPM now, EML is constantly on, it's like it hits the rev limiter.

Tried to start it again, it's VERY difficult to start.. turns over and over, and only fires eventually with foot down hard on throttle - W-O-T.

Not had chance to read the codes yet, but, is it looking like crank sensor failure?

dunno about the 4 pot J, but Crank sensor "total" failure on the V6 results in a complete shut down....   No start at all. No running, no nowt...

Cam sensor though, I believe has a Limp mode.....  which it's sounding like you're experiencing...

Cam sensor won't cause the bad starting  :)

Don't be so sure. You retard the timing 12 degrees or so and see how easy it is to start... ;)

 :-?

I think it does on the 4pots! when mine was going it would take a lot of cracking when warm and the spanner light would stay on....

Crank sensor does not cause the 4000rpm rev limit and limp home mode to be imposed.....my money is on cam sensor....it will be harder to satrt as the ECU wont know when to fire the injectors and will be block firing them....on a cold engine the fuel wont evaporate on the back of the valves so its more prone to flooding....

Well, here's one for the books.

At work, opened the bonnet. Followed cable from the crank sensor... along to the connector... and it was disconnected.

I confirmed 100% it was the crank sensor plug, followed it by hand right the way back to the sensor to be sure.

Sooo ... it was the crank sensor... and I didn't know the 2.0's would fire up without a crank sensor!

Plugged it back in... and all is fine again!

Hmmm thats interesting.....my 2.2 will start (just) with the crank sensor disconnected.....but the previous symptoms you described where classic cam sensor failure.

As TD proved to me, 4 pots will run without crank sensor....

My money would have been on cam, but crank on 4 pots seems to give similar symptoms...
