TD - You might have a point about the cold starting, with my cam sensor going it was fine on cold starts.

Could be the crank sensor.

Vince, either get the fault codes read by a local stealer or get a 'cheapo' tech2 from eBay, it you have a laptop with a real com port you can read the codes!  :y

Could the HT leads be folding up?  1000rpm seems a bit low for the leads, bit of a long shot.

Its a 2.2, doesnt have HT leads, uses a coil pack instead  :y

And I guess it could be this breaking down  :-/

If the coil pack was going it would miss fire, it should also rev higher than 1k (be a back of bolts but it should)

My money is on the cam sensor  :y

It depends on the prob with the coil pack Tunnie (if it does have a prob in this case) Ive seen a faulty coil pack rev fine when in N....and even behave when engine driven gently.....start giving it stick...and then it starts to misbehave underload....and missing like a goodun....it really depends if its 'slightly' duff or well knackered, in my experience.

Crank sensor prob should still let the engine rev to 4.5k in limp mode.....tho will cause starting probs when the engine is cold.

Most local back street garage have generic code readers these days.....if you know a friendly one...see if they will read the codes for you....for a beer token or two.....cheaper than vx dealer  :y

Well....all i can say is that limp mode will let the engine rev to 4.5k....not the 1k as Vince says his sometimes maxs to.

So makes me think ignition prob.....so after plugs.....theres not much left....

Remember on DBW units, the TB will have the servos in to control the throttle position.  It may explain why it won't rev above 1k - the throttle isn't opening properly?

Decent diag equipment can check this....
