Rear box... opinion which to buy
« on: 18 April 2007, 10:43:42 »

I have my MOT next month! :(

I know I have a whole in my back box so I am gonna need to get a new one. It is the twin pipe type

What are peoples opinion on what to get. I am not to bothered about the twin pipe. I never keep cars for more than 2 years so a stainless one that lasts forever is'nt an option.

I have a very limited budget.

I would normally goto places like Quick fit or ATS.. should these places be avoided.

Also there are some on ebay

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/EXHAUST-Vauxhall-OMEGA-B-Saloon-2-5-Rea-Silencer-P17234_W0QQitemZ200099472377QQihZ010QQcategoryZ10404QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

anyone had experience of these?

What sort of cost am I looking at generally?

Thanks

From what you have said, I would simply go for what you can afford.  If buying the rear box from e-bay, have a look at the bolts on the box that is on the car at present.  Do the nuts look as though they will undo?  If so, then go ahead - you will save on both the box and fitting.  If not, then I have always found ATS good in the past.  Plus, if you are in the AA you get 10% off.

There is a another thread on here discussing pre MOT checks.  Have a look at this prior to your test and check what you can.  Could save you a retest fee if nothing else!

Hope this helps and good luck with the MOT.

£75-£85 I think, IIRC - depending on which side, ones more expensive than the other..

I fitted the 3l estate version to my car as a stopgap (since there was still a couple of years left in my middle sections).  Have to say I was pleasantly surprised in the quality, sounds OK and only took three working days to arrive.

When the next bit goes however, it will be a complete GM replacement.

I wouldn’t go back to a kwik Fit type place after seeing a back box fitted to my Carlton with a lump hammer – 6 days later the manifold was blowing where the support bracket had sheared off.

I'd go GM all the way chap, any other makes are made out of cheaper materials and sound crap!

I had a non GM cat on my 2Ltr and it caused me more trouble that it's worth.  I ended up buying a 2nd hand GM cat in the end just so i could sell it!

My MV6 needs a back box and i have been advised to replace it with GM one too... £68 (ish) TC

GM boxes are the best that is true and TC prices are a good deal lower than retail.  However, if price is an issue than this makes the GM option more difficult.

I bought an exhaust recently on TC, I will check the prices that I paid later.  The two middle sections are priced differently, but I can't remember which way round they are at present.

Last week:

90572637  3.0V6 Twin Pipe Exit Backbox £145.00 retail, £99.70 TC
93181160  2.5V6 Centre section (cant remember if L or R) £107.00 Retail, £92.26 TC
93181163  2.5V6 Centre section (cant remember if L or R) £122.00 Retail, £76.25 TC

Heres the prices I paid for mine last week.  All TC prices were +VAT and Im assuming the retail ones were too.   Didnt query at the time, but the middle price doesnt look as discounted as the rest.  Overall this seems to be quite a bit higher than others have suggested it should be though  :(  dont know if I got a poor TC level of discount or if the prices have gone up?

Ah well at least I was getting the normal TC discount.  Being my first time in there with a shiny new TC card I didnt want to push my luck and start querying things...  Thanks!  :y

Well, for interest, this is what I paid for mine:

93181162 RH Centre Silencer £95.26
93181157 LH Centre Silencer £92.76
09157100 Rear Silencer (Single Pipe) £86.02
24434133 Exhaust Bolt £0.55

These were the trade club prices, Ex VAT, using an Autobahn Stormers Club Membership card.

The retail prices are:

93181162 RH Centre Silencer £112.00
93181157 LH Centre Silencer £109.00
09157100 Rear Silencer (Single Pipe) £107.00
24434133 Exhaust Bolt £0.63

I don't know why one centre box is more expensive than the other though.

Like you Jon, I wondered if I was getting the corect level of discount and I am pleased to note that I did, even if my prices are a few pence more here and there.

You got trade, not trade club prices.  Tradeclub is nearly £25 cheaper per part.
