Revs at idle
« on: 01 May 2007, 22:36:59 »

2.0 auto facelift, always running at about 700rpm when started up sat in park, but a couple of days ago it ran at 1000rpm on start and stayed at that for a minute until i drove it abit, at first chance of stopping, i dropped it into park and it settled back at 700rpm

i just went out now to move my car down to give my brother room to get out in the morning, and it ran at 1000rpm and didnt drop, i kept on the brake and selected drive and reverse just to interfere with revs, and put it in park and revved a bit, the engine "sound" doesnt appear abnormal, at all, it just hovered around 1000 again. temperature outside is reasonable, i had it serviced yesterday by my local guy, asked him to check it out, he found nothing wrong

here's the tricky part.. i have a VERY dodgy memory, and basically i dont remember exactly how long ago it first did it, i.e 2 days, 3 days, or even yesterday, and i dont even remember what time of day it was either!! So basically i cant report on any changes in temp at the first occurence or any other possible similar factor affected by different times of day

Don't know much about 4-potters, but I imagine there will be an ICV somewhere so might not be a bad idea to take it apart and give it a good clean with carb cleaner... together with the throttle body etc.

Yes...

And after some further investigation, I believe it might be that bit:

Perhaps someone else could confirm....

And although the throttle body on the 2.2 is different, this might give you an idea of what's involved in taking it apart and cleaning it:

The big round bit, that looks like a baked bean can above the arrow is the throttle body housing.  This can get dirty and cause the sticking you mentioned. First thing to try is to pop off the plastic hose that covers it and give the butterfly a couple of drops of 3in1 oil (not WD40) and see if that helps - it may just be sticking open or there may be dirt getting in the way.

If you've never done it before follow the guide for cleaning out the breathers and see if that helps.  Either way it's nothing to worry about at the moment - mine used to stick at 1200rpm and frighten old ladies at zebra crossings  :D

The guide for the 2.2 is very helpful - it is similar enough to the 2.0 in that area.

The ICV is easy to remove and benefits from a good clean but that's not the end of the story.

Make sure you clean the throttle body and the breather pipes that go to the cam cover.  The thin one in particular gets clogged up, along with the port that connects it below the throttle body.  Having spent an hour cleaning it I gave up and bought a new one for 4 quid.   But don't forget the port as well, or you are wasting your time on the pipe.   The port is heated by a coolant pipe surrounding it and the black gunk gets baked hard.    Apparently its the blocking of this that causes many of the idle problems that the 2.0 suffers from.

Having said that, my 2.0 runs at 1500rpm or so for a minute or two on cold start and then settles to I guess around 700. I never worry about it.   If it stays fast it may be you have a leak somewhere in hose, or throttle sticking open.  As said, good clean up is the first step.

Cheers

Ian

Yes, ICV and throttle body clean should sort it.  Even if it doesn't, it will make it run better :y

Another thing that can cause high idle is a knackered coolant temp sensor, or air leaks...

You say you just had it serviced....then it started doing it....if so, i would give it a few days and it might settle down....it maybe summat as simple as air filter has been changed and was way over due for change and the ecu is just relearning.

My 2.2 was way overdue for a new air filter at one point.....it had done over 60k mines on the same air filter.....when i changed it....it started to idle fast....about 1k revs....after a couple of days it sorted itself out and normal idle revs resumed  :y
