Petrol Smell
« on: 18 May 2007, 09:55:58 »

Hi Again, there seems to be some very wise and wonderfull people on here, so i have i small problem, well its not a problem as such, just a smell.

I keep getting a very strong smell of petrol inside the car, not sure when it happens, this morning it was when i had been going down the motorway, then took the slip road, when i got to traffice lights and stopped, it was really strong, as if someone had spilt petrol inside the car.

Any Ideas????

Mark.  :)

There is a round inspection bit in boot floor under carpet - check this for leaks. Then check for leaks on fuel rails under bonnet...

I will have a Look, Where are the fuel rails, what they look like, will it be easy enough to see, ie: wettish or oily on outside??

Thanks.. Mark  :y

You'll see fuel fails going to injector rail.  Rubber pipes with corrigated metal over, often yellow sticker saying 'FUEL'

Petrol evaporates quickly, so you may need to check with engine running...

Yes agreed with TheBoy here. Check the twoi flexi pipes from the left of the engine bay towards the plenum. there is a 19mm nut and a 17mm nut on them. Check they are both done up, it is very easy to forget after working on these if you are not methodical. the other part of that is the back oif the fuel rail where that union goes to. Another joint back there, but you will need to pop the plenum off to see that. Otherwise, check the fuel pressure relief valve isn't stuck open. Again, under the plenum on the fuel rail. Should have a tyre valve type cap on it. Give the little plunger a quck press and fuel will shoot out.

Hi, Just checked all that, all of the pipes are tight with no leaks, checked the valve under the tyre cap, the shot petol out when depressed, So that all ok.

What i did see under there is:

Where the air pipe fixes onto the throttle body is oily and messy, the rest of the engine is clean, just that bit there, as if its leaking something.

Any more ideas...  :)
