hi, first time on here got a few for ya, hopefully someone out there can help, I have a 2.0 CD 2000 (V), had problems with stalling at the most annoying moments ie. approaching roundabouts and junctions, the car can run fine for days on end and then it will have a day of total distruption everytime I slow down and put the clutch in it will stop, had the AA out a couple of times they plug in there fault reader and say it could be air mass meter, crankshaft sensor or cam sensor prob but can't be sure as the car would'nt do it whilst they where here they then close the bonnet and off they go. What i would like to know is can I carry out the paper clip test on my model and year or can I buy a fault reader to check the code myself when it does it and how easy are these jobs if I have to do all of them.Sorry I must sound a bit thick but you guys and gals on here seem to be the subject matter gurus and I think I just need a gentle push in the right direction. cheers

Yes, paperclip will work (2.0l needs ign on, engine off)

Though I suspect either a sticky ICV - clean it, or an air intake leak (hence why MAF sensor throwing a fault - its likely that the MAF is faulty)

 Thanks for the welcome, yes have been registered for a wee while only just really got time now to post, is cleaning the ICV an easy job? I have a haynes manual but it only goes upto 99 I dont think they have produced one for later models?would it be possible to send me the link for the paper clip test? Cheers

Haynes is valid - the engine (and most of the car) is identical .  Remove ICV, and clean with carb cleaner.  Also do throttle body as well (Auto Addict has written one for 2.2 in Maintenence Guides section, yours should be similar enough to follow that guide).  Then search for possible air leaks.

if your cleaning out the icv valve spend a bit longer and clean out and check the two breather pipes that go from the left side of the cam box cover to the throttle body (small pipe gets)gets blocked very easy this controls your tick over, and if its blocked it send the air through the large pipe clogging up your icv, the small connection on the throtle body will need cleaning aswell this can be removed just take the throttle body off and move it out the way follow the route of the small pipe to the throtle body and this is the thing that gets blocked it can be removed with a 19mm spanner, a good way to check if the small pipe and connector is blocked is remove all the large black air inlet piping from the  top of the throttle body and wedge open the butterfly valve with a screwdriver, remove the small pipe from the cam box cover and with a can of carb cleaner spray down the pipe, and with a torch look inside the throttle body for the carb cleaner coming out of the small hole about half way down just past the butterfly valve, i do this every few mounths and takes 15 mins to check if the small pipe and connector is blocked
