Underbody 'clunk'
« on: 23 May 2007, 08:17:05 »

Hi guys
Minor problem (I hope)
I've recently had new shockers fitted on the front, plus a new track rod end on the o/s/f
I seem to be getting a slight clunk when I go over road humps that I can 'feel' through the drivers floor pan.
When I was watching the fitter put the tie rod arm on he pointed out a rubber bush that was 'coming away from the metal bit' on the front suspension lower arm, he said it might need attention in about 6months.

Is this the cause? is this something I can do myself? or is it cheap enough to get fixed?

Appreciate any comments

I Had the same noise, follow  AA's link.   Changed the bones (along with bushes and ball joints ) these can be got on the bay of e complete. I also changed the steering idler on passinger side.  This sorted it out , nice and quiet over bumps.
Cheers
Lyn.

Sounds like wishbones to me.  Mine only lasted 43,000 miles :(

£45 a set from www.buypartsby.co.uk

Yep, either wishbones or drop-links. Neither is a big job

If it's wishbones then it's easier to change the whole thing than the individual bushes.
Make sure the bolts are re-torqued when all four wheels are on the ground and taking the full weight of the car. Otherwise the bushes will fail prematurely. (That's something I learnt from the Gurus on this site !!)

So far I've changed the front wheel bearings (£30 each), drop links (£15 each, wishbones (£38 each) and the whole engine cradle(about £200..I think! I'm trying to forget that one !!). Next job...steering box.

I have 220,000 on the clock on my 2.5td. The motor is sweet and the body has only the usual "lower corner of the rear doors" rust bubbles, so I don't mind the work to do the other bits.

I think that if you know you have a good, reliable, trusty motor, you don't mind spending possibly more than car is worth to keep it going...
