Changing front pads - Lucas Calipers
« on: 21 May 2007, 21:16:01 »

Just a quickie! ;)

I am planning to change the front pads on my 2002 2.2i CD - already bought pads from my local dealer.  Never changes pads on the Meega before and not got a workshop manual, so can anybody give me a quick 'run-down' and what size sockets/torx/allen drives I need?

They are Lucas calipers by the way!

Thanx in advance!! :y

No usual tools need for front pads.  IIRC, single 15mm bolt to be removed (and replaced - new one comes with the pads).

Changed mine only a few weeks ago, it is an easy job, took me 40 mins to do both sides, did you get new brake wear sensor as getting the old one out of the pad is not easy without snapping it. I aint sure if they may be something on the technical side of the forum.
Once you remove the wheel you will see it is very easy
From memory, remove the cap from the brake fluid bottle under the bonnet
slacken off the lock nut on the caliper slider rail
Unclip the rubber brake pipe from the mounting on the suspension strut, this allows you to swing the caliper up.
undo and remove the caliper slide bolt
swing the caliper up
remove the old pads
remove the old wear sensor if possible, if not, a new one will be needed.
retract the caliper piston, I used a G clamp for this, be careful not to pinch the rubber seal on the caliper
clean all around the disc, caliper etc.
refit a wear sensor onto the pad
Refit the new pads, put a little copper slip or simular on the back of the pads
swing the caliper back into position ensuring the springs on the pads are seated correctly
replace in reverse order.
Torque the slide bolt to 35Nm
pump the brake a few times and do the same on the other side
Sounds complicated but once the wheel is off you will see it is quite easy.
