Slight tapping for a few seconds and a bit of smoke out the back (oil going down the cylinders when changing spark plugs) for a few secs then lovely and quite :y

Done about 50 miles in her today but when i lifed the bonnet I could heard a hissing coming from the  Coolant Resevoir Cap is this right or do i need another cap????

i had a hissing sound coming from my 2 ltr when stopped with the engine off and the hbv went in a big way does it lose any water, the hissing sound was air being drawn in through the hbv and then finding its way up to the expansion tank, also the car would smell of hot coolant after a long run i couldnt see any leaks under the car and was only losing a small amount of water before it let go, but try going to a scrappy he may well give you a 2nd hand cap for next to nothing and try that

The expansion bottle caps on both my V6 have two valves, one I believe to be the overpressure relief and the other works the opposite way round. it allows air in when the system cools and the coolant contracts. I can often hears gentle hissing at the cap after shutdown.
A Halfords copy cap on the shelf has only one valve visible. I can't tell if has more than one function.

It has just occurred to me that if a HBV is drawing in air, could this be caused by no inlet valve in the cap?

Also the cap has stopped hissing now i have all the air out of the cooling system, i had not done it last night :-? so that is probably why ::)
