Hi guys,  am going to change front and rear brake pads, does any body have a brilliant way of spreading/compressing the caliper piston, that doesn't use any specialist tools. Tried getting a piston spreader locally, no one has any

What I do is

1) Clamp the flexi brake hose
2) Attach some pipe to the bleed nipple and then open it
3) Push the pistons in.
4) Remove old pads and fit new
5) Quick bleed of the brake

It has the advantage of guaranteeing that no air gets into the ABS unit and you wont invert any master cylinder seals plus gets the old fluid out of the caliper (and puts new in if your changing the fluid also). Plus the pistons are easy moveas there is no fluid pressure.

thats better than the way i do it useing pipe pliers and gently compressing it back ill do it that way from now on thanks

I got mine online for £15 and it was delivered within 2 working days... makes the job much easier and no risk of damaging the piston.

Absolutely essential in my experience, it's a pig to get air bubbles out of the ABS modulator, even with TECH II 'excercising' the Modulator while you bleed the brakes.
