always had poor performance from my Omega?
« on: 09 June 2007, 14:24:54 »

This might seem a stange question but is it possible that my car has always had poor performance over the last nearly 8 years?!

We had a string of 2 litre Carltons before buying this auto petrol 2.5 Omega. It had 48k on the clock when we bought it and now has over 140k.  It goes OK but not startlingly so. We just thought it was a bigger car so what do you expect.

Things came to a head when we needed to tow a caravan and on a test nearly didn't make it up a local 1 in 5 hill. It boiled as well. The local VX diagnosed "new radiator" which fixed the overheating. The kickdown reluctance was diagnosed as new auto box selector switch. For a while things were Ok and we did about 7000 towing miles with no problems. Nowadays I drive sedately but always feel the car should have more go.

Now is it possible that each time the cam belt has been changed that it is a tooth out? Is there something else which might cause the car to generally be down on power compared to another V6? ( Sadly I have never driven another to compare but as a passenger in an auto diesel Omega I was impressed by its acceleration!)

i wondered that with mine, i had the cambelt done at the garage when i first bought it and i get the feeling i should have a little more. i wondered if they had set it with a tooth out.
up to 2,500 rpm its fairly mundane and it needs to be always dropped down a gear to make it move.

is there any way you could be sure the cams have been timed with the timing / locking kit. Had this problem with my V6 & it turned out the timing had been set up with paint marks by muppet garage :-[

That's the best way to check the timing, when the crank is locked with the tool you put the timing gauge onto the camwheels and see if the marks align with those on the camwheels, if they do youre timed up correctly, if not you move the adjusters till you are. Only problem is its a bit of a pain to get to so you might as well do the cambelt and waterpump while youre there if its anywhere near due.

It could be a partially blocked exhaust - that creeps up on you - and really reduces power with few other symptoms.

Is the exhaust original?

The cam timing being out will affect performance, most notably by a flat spot at around 3k rpm.

Other issues are blocked breathers and throttle bodies (easy fix), partially blocked exhaust, well worn spark plugs, old fuel filter (often overlooked!), old air filter etc.

Check these out first.

It isn't breathers or throttle body. Did those following the excellent guidance on the forum last year when I changed my DIS pack and plug leads to cure a misfire that was down to the DIS pack. It isn't spark plugs or filters they were changed late last year too.

Fuel filter. Could be. Will get that done. That could be a really cheap fix!!!! :y

Exhaust. Yes it is the original in all parts. mmm That has taken a beating on the rough country roads around here and needs some attention. Just had a look at the front boxes near the front footwells, they are well bashed. I hope that isn't the problem!  Could the exhaust have been partially blocked when we bought the car at 2 years old/48k!?

Let's see how things go when the new fuel filter gets there.

Oh, you will have so much fun with the clips..... ;D

that was one thing i noticed when i got my 2.5, the performance was not startling, however i found it had a good spread of torque which seemed to make up for the lack of grunt.

bearing in mind that they 2.5 was rated at 168 bhp from the factory, ok its no slouch, but for a car of this weight it will not set the world alight either

I've not had a problem with the fuel filter clips ... on the 2nd time changing the filter (on the estate ... fun that was ...) I didn't even break one!!

But I replaced both just to be sure ... they ain't expensive but can leave you with a problem if they do break ::)
