Following all the repairs to my 2.0 1998 auto shes finnally back on the road and running quite smooth, however one thing I have noticed is how quickly shes going through fuel. Since putting her back on the road Ive put just £20 in the tank, however shes only done 16 miles and you can see the guage and trip computer clocking down the miles. It goes down a mile ever 500yrds, however I cant see a fuel leak anywhere.

is it possible it could be leaking across the manifold and blowing straight out the exhaust??

it could be running rich some how if no sign of leak does it smell like it running rich smell of fuel from exhusts if you werent sure lol just a idea

Have a good look around the joints from tank to engine bay, but not with a lit match!  Your nose and a strong torch are the best tools.

Quickest test is perhaps to get a friendly garage to put the gas reader up the rear pipe and get an indication of whats actually happening.

Most accurate method of reading you consumption is obviously to fill the tank, run the car for a 100 miles or so then refill and calculate the consumption, rather than rely on the guage in the car.

As I understand it, it can take a wee while for the brain to adjust and readjust after work has been done to the system before it gives a true reading.

No doubt someone more cleverer than whot I is will be along later to advise....

If it's just the "range" display on the MID you're looking at, I would take it with a pinch of salt. It could be that it's seeing only slightly lower fuel economy than it has done in the past so it's revising the estimate as you drive.

If a fuel leak is bad enough to cause a fuel economy problem it should be easy to spot. Start by removing the panel in the boot floor to reveal the connections to the top of the tank and follow the fuel lines under the floor through the fuel filter to the engine bay. Have a good look for leaks around the tank and the filler neck as well, in case these have ruptured.

As Bruce says, a quick check with an MOT analyser will tell you if it's running rich although I would have thought you'd get a fault code if something was wrong in this department. In fact, check that the engine and emissions check lights on the dash work when you first turn the ignition on and extinguish when you start the engine. Sometimes the bulbs are removed to disguise a fault!

Edited to say: Just spotted you've got an estate so the advice regarding the panel in the boot floor may not be correct. Not sure of the tank location on the estate.

Well all the lights are working and it appears to have settled down on ecconomy  

However, she is still really flat when accelerating. Ive ordered the new ICV gasket which should be here tom morning so will see if that is the issue. Will also check the hoses again and see if I can see any leaks.

Any other suggestions welcome!
