Glovebox removal
« on: 21 June 2007, 08:40:31 »

I know this has been asked before but.....

How do you remove the glovebox? I've removed the two screws (one each side), i've removed the passenger air nozzle and removed the hidden screw but it still wont budge. It appears you have to remove the airbag cover but I didn't want to do that without asking all the experts on here!

All I want to do is reach the VDA cable (the one that allows you to plug in your car phone kit via an Autolead cable) that is supposedly taped to the top but I can't see it.....

My only other thought is to try using a mirror!

Along the top edge are 3 screws fixing the bottom of the airbag, remove these and the glovebox should come out.

Can't remember if they're torx or philips but there are three. You're looking to remove the screws and just lift the airbag a little.

To be safe you should really disconnect the car battery a good few minutes before going near the airbag with a screwdriver.

Thanks

Yup, remove these and then you can just ease the airbag cover out of the way ;)

I've had the glovebox out on two miggy's now ... last time was on my 3.2 to find the VDO connector. Best approach is to disconnect battery, wait a minute or two, then undo the three torx bolts that hold down the airbag cover, it's these you need to undo to remove the glovebox. The airbag module is behind this cover, so in theory you should be OK without removing the battery - but it's not really something worth risking!!

On mine the VDO connector was taped up with what looked like masking tape, to a plastic bar that runs behind the glovebox - easy to spot once the glovebox was removed.

Slightly off topic. What is the vdo/vda connection and what can it be used for?

VDO/VDA, whatever it's called, is basically a connector that gives a 12V / 12V switched / Ground / Speaker input (to head unit), Mute (to Head Unit) and occasionally if you've got one fitted in the courtesy lamp, microphone connection to plug your mobile hands free kit into.

I think it's only on facelift cars unless ordered with the car and you need an autoleads 06-102B lead (No Bose) or a 06-106B (With Bose) to connect the kit to the loom.

There's also supposed to be an aerial connector by the drivers kick panel if your car has the bee-sting type roof aerial.

Also bear in mind that Mr Haynes isn't correct when he says there are only 4 screws holding the glove box in. My late PRE face lift has 5 which I think is the same as the face lift cars. The 5th screw is hidden towards the top behind the D shaped dash end panel.

Success! Disconnected the battery (waited 20 mins as I was paranoid!) and removed the three torx bolts then gently lifted the cover to reveal the two hidden glovebox screws.

As sounds2k said, the conector and cable was taped with masking tape to a cable tray which was immediately visible once the glovebox was removed.

I've taken some photo's that i'll post a link to later if anyone wants to write a 'how to'

The autoleads cable is an 06-109b (not 06-106b as I mentioned earlier) for bose equipped systems. I got mine from http://www.siocommunications.co.uk/ if anybody is looking for the same.

Thanks for everyones help.
