2.6 Rear Brakes Question
« on: 22 June 2007, 17:48:07 »

Had my handbrake adjusted last year by Nationwide (before I discovered the ace "How too's" on here :y) and the numpty's fitted the shoes incorrectly causing the discs to be scored on the inside and they now squeel - "Take it back" I here you say - unfortunately I work away a lot and since i've hardly driven my car in the last 1 year (2027 miles!!! :'() am reluctant to argue the point with them to get them fixed - plus don't trust them to do it right.
Anyhow to the point - the rear discs on mine are vented and the motor factors' incl ebay only supply solid. Have gotten a price off Vauxhalls  :o for replacement vented discs but am alarmed at the cost differential between solid and vented...... sooo what would the reason be for vented rears  and what would the potential pitfalls of going back to solid be? - that's if they ever where fitted in the first place!!

Any suggestions appreciated.

Facelifts were fitted with vented. I guess your insurance would be invalid if you 'downgraded' the braking system.

£77 + VAT a pair from dealer if you have TC access

Cheers for the quick response.  Hadn't thought about the insurance - must have been the loudness of my missus complaining about the cost!! But needs must - shall bite the bullet and use the dealers .

Don't have access to a TC so have to put up with the full hit on prices am afraid.  Oh the joys of being married to an accountant :'(

well my 3.0 facelift (2000 model year) definitely had solid rears, whereas the 3.2 (2002 model year) has vented ... so possibly not all facelifts have vented rears?

When I was getting prices from VX they where suprised they where vented and suggested it was a police upgrade - since the  plod never had my car - although it's a manual (another suggestion by the dealer as to origin of ownership) they suggested it was a private upgrade though they hadn't checked in their computer due to being down for maintenance to verify if it was a factory fit. :-/

Anyhow just going to replace like for like.

Would a change of handbrake shoes be a recommendation whilst doing this disc changeout as well??

All V6's of 2001 model year and onwards had vented rears.....

And join autobahnstormers.....it costs 20 quid a year and you get trad club prices.....it will ahev paid for it self with the discs alone.

Plus, dont buy genuine shoes, get after market but, do by genuine pads.

Cheers for the shoes advice and have just printed out the joining form for the autobahnstormers club.  Should come in handy over the next few months  :y

Best forum I've ever been involved in :y, so much better than the Renault forum I use for my wifes clit - they're totally clueless half the time >:(

they are not uprated shoes, just pattern. Its just the genuine ones are so dear, and it is not part of breaking system, purely handbrake.

As M_DTM says, rear (and front) pads should be genuine - they are used to slow down ;)
