Me again..... Sorry
« on: 22 June 2007, 00:32:04 »

Bet your all getting sick of me by now  ;D My old man just went for a drive in my car, and has come back after an hour or so (would have been out longer but fuel low lol) and he said my temp guage is naff cos it didnt move, I have noticed also, but I was stuck in gridlock for hours a few days ago and it did climb to about 95 and presume the fans kicked in cos it went back to the minimum indicated 90 degrees, is this normal running temps or is the thermostat broken or has temp sensor turned its toes up?
Cheers and sorry for being a pest  :-[ (3.0 MV6)

my 3.olt mv6 takes about 10 2 15 mins before rising and the fan starts at about the same temp best thing i can suggest is to try running the car with bonnet up from cold and feel when the rad starts to get hot then see if the gauge starts to move that should tell you if its in accrute

If its taking more than 10mins to start moving and getting upto normal temp, then i would defo think your thermostat is stuck open.
Once its upto normal temp......if you then take it for a blast and the temp gauge starts dropping towards the blue zone.....thats another indication the thermostat is fubared.

.. and if so, you need to do a search for the phrase 'b@stard bolt'  ;D

Mine does the same (although I have never seen it drop again as TD describes), but on a winter day I can get to the office after 30 mins and the needle has only just moved off the end stop.

:-? havent got a 'blue zone' marker on coolant temp quage, its just a white line saying 90, then incriments of 5 degrees are marked upto a temp of 110 with a red line.... have to try and get a pic of it, I do know the rad gets hot after about 15 mins of running idle cos while i've been trying to find blowing under the bonnet I nearly lost my fingers with the fans turning on  ;D - dont know weather to take that as a good sign that the thermo is ok or not? Temp guage stayed on the bottom 90 degrees tho  :-/
The car is trying to bancrupt I think

Should run just under midway point on gauge. Sounds like stat is stuck open, or been drilled by some idiot.

mine runs just under midway, only ever creeps when in traffic and in very hot weather, and even then it barely exceeds 92

Did you say fans come on but gauge is still on the bottom?  That doesn't sound like the stat to me.  But in an earlier post you said that it does go up sometimes..?  Can you clarify?

My 99 2.5 V6 has always run at 95 with Climate on, will creap up slightly if stuck in heavy traffic or  I climate turned off. I assume this is because this also turns off fans in front of condensor. The main rad fan very rarely comes on certainly not with just normal driving only traffic orwhen left ticking over.
Does sound like faulty Stat to me just done mine when resealing Oil cooler plate after spending about 1 hour on the above mentioned xxxxxxxxxxxx bolt I decided to spend the extra £30 odd quid while it was apart.

Bestof luck

Think all is ok..... took her out and really gave the engine some stick, temp went up just passed 95 with air con off, then on the steady drive home dropped to about 85-90, gonna give the cooling system a good flush out tomorrow, though the water seems perfectly clean and not getting any lumpy idling that could be caused by overheating etc...... thanks for all the help guys, much appreciated (oh and my mistake, the minimum temp is 80 on my car not 90  :-[ must get me eyes tested lol) :y

Below 90 I would question in summer temperatures, my experience is that coolant temp varies not much more than the width of the pointer in normal running with climate control on. Actual temperature varies with 2.5 or 2.6, calibration is different, but halfway up the scale is normal.
My 2.6 was dropping to around 80 in the winter, thermostat changed change brought it back. Not an easy job though.

I would try flushing with 'Forte Cooling Flush', by far the best flush I have come across, then refilling with Vauxhall Red antifreeze if you have access to Trade Club (coz its cheap).  However, sounds like you need to remove stat first to check it....

thermostats on v6's rarely get changed as they are abugger to get at, but luckily for the engine when they fail it always seems to be in the open position. I changed mine when I was doing the "cam cover dance" in early march and it made the car warm up quicker, engine and heater, and it felt nicer to drive cos I suppose it was at its prpoer operating temp. and fuel consumption was reduced slightly, definetely worth doing !
