Thermostat
« on: 27 June 2007, 01:40:07 »

Does this sound like its knackered, the car engine temp keeps creeping whilst driving along but not overheating fortunately the fans cut in and having stopped to check the oil I see bubbles on the oil filler cap.

Rad pipes top and bottom get hot.

Coolant bottle is red with fresh vx stuff and the oil dipstick is reading as normal no change in oil level or crud.

It seem like the coolant is not circulating properly.

I have been having thoughts it could be the HG on its way out, but wondering whether this could be the thermostat being stuck open or closed.

I have decided not to use the car today as I think the air bubbles on the filler cap is the oil cooking/boiling. :-[ :'(

How much should a new thermostat cost as a rule.

Can anyone confirm my thoughts as I just dont know where to start really

It's a bit of a wierd one. Have you got any mayonnaise or muck of any kind under the oil filler cap? Just wondering how the bubbles are getting there?

What temperature is the engine running at?

It's normal for the engine temperature to creep up in traffic until the fans start and bring it down again. If it doesn't regularly go over 100 degrees and the fans bring the temperature under control I'd say it's normal. Quite often the temperature will be more stable with the air conditioning on as it runs the auxiliary fan(s) all the time in this mode.

If both rad pipes are hot this confirms that coolant is circulating properly through the rad. Has the coolant been changed recently? Could be that the rad. is sludging up a little and has reduced efficiency. It might be worth giving it a dose of cooling system flush and changing the coolant.

I very much doubt you've got oil boiling. The engine would have to be seriously overheating for that. I wonder if your breathers are blocked and you've got a bit of gas being blown past the oil filler. There are guides to cleaning the breathers on here. I'd be inclined to check the breathers ASAP before the cam cover gasket fails.

Cheers,

Kevin

Yesterday normal driving temp would go upto 97+ or there abouts and the fans would cut in and bring the temp back down to 95, coolant was changed about a month ago when the HBV failed.

The oil to me is fine there are no signs of sludge on the dipstick or the filler cap, the bubbles appear when the car has been run for a little while.

The rad itself was replaced last year and looks brand new still but you just cant know what its like inside it.

Could it be the thermostat has only just given up the ghost and giving the impression coolant is going round.

Guessing :-[ :'( :-/

Any thoughts or ideas would be much appreciated

As Kevin said - pretty strange, to me anyway.

Start with the basic, cleaning breathers and coolant if it not recent.

May not fix the problem but a> its always worth doing and B> means it can be eliminated.

Car idling properly and any signs of over preassurising?

the car ticks over fine and the pressure cap after a run is fine no hissing nothing, I shall check the breather system when I get home later.

Cheers for all the suggestions so far

My car temperture sits at 95 until i turn on the air con, then it rises to 97..... i would have thought that with the engine having the extra load it would run slightly hotter with the air con on.. As soon as I turn it off the gauge goes straight back down to 95 again... :-?
