Plea for help from Tidworth! V6 Stalling
« on: 30 June 2007, 19:02:18 »

Hi Guys,

We've got a car at Tidworth which seems to have developed an idling problem after being re-assembled.

Took it apart to change the cam cover gaskets. Found the small breather pipe from the rear of the plenum to the breather block at the rear of the driver's side bank was split so we replaced this. In addition the vacuum reservoir by the front multiram had the usual broken hose union so we have glued this back in place.

Car now starts and idles much better than before, but it cuts out after 30 seconds or so of idling. I'm not sure if it's related to the above problems we have fixed or if it's something else we've disturbed.

Car seems to stall a second or two after the SAI pump cuts out. Not sure if this is coincidental or not. It's a clean cut with no misfire, etc. as if the igntion has been switched off.

No EML showing.

We've swapped the ICV from another car and it makes no difference. Also tried re-introducing the breather hose air leak and it still stalls.

The engine doesn't stop if we hold the revs up rather than letting it idle.

It's a '98 3.0 V6.

If anyone can give us some ideas it would be much appreciated.

Kevin (just noticed I'm posting as andycuk71 but never mind!)

The SAI pump cutting out is probably coincidence, but easy enough to eliminate by unplugging the pump.

Good Luck, Pat

Possibly just the engine heating up enough before the crank sensor fails ;)

Glueing is not a good idea on the vac res. You never know whether the glue is blocking the inside of the union or not. I domt think they're that expensive to replace

Thanks for the answers so far.

There is no EML to paper clip

Have a new union on order

Hace just driven car back from Tidworth runs sweet apart from stalling after you stop but restarts no problem.

Any other idea gratefully recieved.

Just reread original post, does sound ICV, or perhaps EGR (or other air leak)

EML comes on when you turn ign on and goes out 2-3 secs after engine starts.the car idles lovely for about  a min then just dies,[no miss fire or lumpyness.before.] No EML WHEN THE  ENGINE DIES.Starts first time everytime. :(

Yep the EML light gos out as normal on this after start up it Idled at about 500 and now and again it reved itself and while idleing at 500 it just died and stalled.

Its not the ICV as gary swapped his over to check it with his and it still stalled with gary's ICV in
