when a diff or diff bearing lets go you will know it as you will need the ice on max to drown out the sound!!!

the noise your getting from the diff sounds normal

I agree. They aren't silent, especially with no load on them as there is backlash in the gears. Also, if the car's jacked up the driveshafts will be at a fair angle and the UJs might be making some noise.

Diffs should be quiet on these and very rarely give trouble so a second hand item is a good bet (get the right ratio though!) and easy enough to change.

I suspect its the pinion bearing gone due to a past pinion seal being replaced in-correctly and the nut was overtightened, does the noise vary with load/throttle position?

The diff noise varies with speed and not throttle position and does not chnage whether under load or turning by hand. It's definately not quiet when turned - but not so that I need the ICE on loud to mask it.  I've probably muddied the waters to be honest due to me having two noise issues - one appearing to be diff related but another being transmission related which stops on pushing in the clutch. The diff noise gets louder going down hill if you can believe that and quietens down going up.  This ones beaten me (which is unusual) and am hopeful Vauxhalls can give me a not too harsh quote to repair tomorrow - or at least give the exact issue(s) I have with noises coming from bearings at the mo so I can plan it long term if going to be on the expensive side.

I wouldn't let Vauxhall change anything. Diff or Gearbox would be very much cheaper sourced second hand!

Kevin

Just picked myself up off the stealers floor after they had a look at my diff problem - replacement - £1800  :o  :o :o

Have had a quote off a transmission place who can replace the bearings for £450 - does that sound reasonable or would you go for a scrappy?

Where can I find the ratio information from?

Cheers

2.6 Cdx Manual is a 3.9:1 ratio....the same as fitted to 3.2 autos, 2.5 manuals (98 onwards), 3.0 autos (98 onwards), 2.0's (all models)

I'd have a look for a 2nd hand diff. You won't have the car off the road waiting for it to be re-conned and diff problems are rare enough that you'd be unlucky to get a bad one, I reckon. Sounds like the ratio is common enough. Would be worth having the back plate off the replacement to check everything looks in decent condition first and to drain the old oil and refill with fresh.
