So much for the theory!!
The heads are off despite the best efforts of the English summer and there is no obvious sign of valve damage. I wasnt expecting to find major damage, just a tiny contact mark on the edge and possibly a sliver of light showing when shining a torch down the port but there is nothing.  :(
I have filled the chambers with paraffin and there is no sign of leakage. I may as well remove the valves and lap them in to make sure they are seating all the way round but Im not hopeful of finding anything wrong so need to rethink.

On the bright side I found the HBV in the first stages of failure so will change that plus the bolts holding the exhaust heatshields on the passenger side were all very loose which explains the rattle.....someone has been in here before.

Fancy checking a diesel head, as your diagnostic skills need more practice ::)  ;D
