Steering wobble when braking.
« on: 11 July 2007, 20:40:01 »

Right  what's this, When braking from speed I get alot of steering wheel wobble quite badly actually.

1. Could this be Idler arm?
2. wishbones?
3. Incorrectly balanced wheel's?
4. Warped disc's (didn't show up on MOT as in front brake inbalance)
5. Worn track rods (inner or outer)
6. Tracking out.

I think it could be the steering Idler arm, so could anyone point me in the right direction? :D

Most likely warped discs, I'd say. It won't show up as an inbalance because that's a difference in braking effort between sides rather than a vibration type balance IYSWIM. They might have seen the braking effort bouncing up and down as the wheel rotates and they have pointed this out to me before. Frequently it only gets bad as the discs heat up though.

Not necessarily, and remember how much depends on the tester ;)

idler arm would show on mot, wishbones also, wheel balance would notice more when driving, speeding up,warped discs when braking at high speed ,from 60 or 70,track rods should show on mot,and last one no concerne

Search for the play is the key, rather than change expensive parts ad-hoc

Well I have the track rods anyway from the other car (facelift) so I was going to replace them anyway. The front discs and pads I can get them really dirt cheap from work, and the Idler arm I have just bought as there was quite a bit of play in the arm. So this little lot wont cost much for me anyway so I might as well change them.

If you have the parts, or can get dirt cheap, makes a lot of sense :)

Had a bad wobble on my motor from speed.
Was going to change front disks ( got them from a cheep source, ;D Hotel21,) When about to remove disc on near side, after taking off wheel, found top bolt on brake calliper not tweaked up tight. Tightened bolt up, wobble fixed. :y

Always check the simplest or replace cheapest part first. ;)

What are the tyres like?  Try swapping front to rear, just to test..
