Headlights
« on: 15 July 2007, 20:30:39 »

Can someone please tell me  I  am wrong  :( I have been doing a few little jobs on the car today and decided to change the side light bulbs not the easiest things to get to ! While I was doing these I noticed that the reflectors seem to be not connected on one side (grill side of unit) I take it that this is not meant to be like that and that something has broken, does any one know if this is repairable or will mean new headlights

I noticed my n/s reflector is loose too, I just wedged a thin piece of rubber between the high beam bulb and bottom of the inside plastic to stop it moving when driving, I cant have done a bad job as it didnt get a fail or advisory on its MOT tho a few other things did  ;D

I think that you may find that one of the two beam the adjuster(s) are no longer attached to the reflectors because the black plastic 'lumps' on the end of them have disintegrated. They appear to be made of a material that does not like being heated & becomes brittle, breaks & causes them to fall off the threaded parts.
I beleive that it is possible to remove the clear plastic lens from the lamps with considerable difficulty, but assuming that all of the bits of the broken part are still present, glueing them back together in such a way that they are reliable is questionable. I think the best remedy is a new headlamp!
(Be wary of buying on e-bay, many offered have broken adjusters that do not become apparent until you fit them & try to set them up correctly, by which time you may have left positive feedback for the Seller)

Ah that sounds like it is going to be the problem, there was an estate down the local scrappies last week not sure if it had headlights still on it. I think I will try and get down there and see if it has may be worth buying a headlamp from it and trying to take that apart rather than take mine apart and bugger them even more  ;)
