Wooble from general chat
« on: 17 July 2007, 12:15:35 »

My MV6 has developed a wooble coming up through the steering wheel, but only when I brake at a certain hardness and road speed

Anyone have any ideas?

First thoughts are wheel balance, Tracking and Camber alignment but surely this would produce the wooble at all times or at particular road speed not just when braking?

Now that I think about it, I had something similar about a year ago. Wheel balance cured it.

Front tyres new March so about 5000 miles old balance and tracking done then.
Have hit no kerbs, but with the state of the roads nowadays probably plenty of potholes etc but nothing major.

What would cause the discs to warp?

They get a little out of round as they wear, IME. Cheap motor factor parts far more so than OEM ones so it pays to get quality replacements.

If the disks are relatively worn I'd replace disks and pads, or put up with it until the pads need doing if it's not too bad.

I have a warped disk on my front n/s, with wheel off if I turn the disk by hand I can feel the disk bite the pads slightly on one half, and if im on motorway, or using brakes heavily, the steering wobbles like crazy - they arnt that noticable when the disks are cold.
Cheapo disks tend to warp very easily (mine are only about 800 miles old and one gone already)

1:Ready for rebalancing if you ask me!  First....

2:Hot discs, maybe a caliper sticking causing a bit of binding on a disc...

While you have the calipers off, worth checking the sliding pins are free and lubricated, that gave me strange shudders.

Don't rule out wear in suspension/steering, esp steering idler arm.

Pattern discs really did not suit my MV6, they are awful. Genuines going on as soon as I've worn the pads down.
