whats this?
« on: 18 July 2007, 15:40:49 »

I've not figured how to attach the picture so I will see if a description works instead.

My 2.6 V6 is losing oil (approx 1 litre in last 300 miles).  I have located the source of the leak.  Its low down on the near-side of the engine, almost directly above the near-side end of the steering centre tie rod (and about 8" above it).  Its pretty much the same size and shape as an oil filter but with a collar type thing around the outer end and a nut type thing on the end.

Pretty poor description I know, but any help would be appreciated.

Cheers.

Yup....cartridge type oil filter housing.

Is it definately coming from here its not:

a) Camcovers leaking onto this area
b) Some muppet has changed the oil cooler and bent the oil cooler pipes and in the process lossened the oil cooler to block unions.

Definately seems to be from that.  Does this mean that the oil filter has been fitted incorrectly by the garage that serviced it a couple of weeks ago?  I'll be narked off it does, as they are the same guys that forgot to install the tensioner & guides when they did the cam belt.

I created an account at photobucket.com
Free and dead easy to use - use the 'insert image' button (above as I type this) when you are creating a post.   I think it is best to use low resolution on your camera setting or you end up with an enormous picture.

Hmmm....I hope they fitted a new seal ring on the cap (it comes with the filter) and it was fitted correctly.

well that's definitely the oil filter housing, I assume the picture was taken from underneath, but you need to double check that there's no oil from on the top of the housing (which would indicate the leak coming from elsewhere), if not then the sealing ring that fits to the cap (and is supplied with the filter ... well genuine ones at least) may be missing ...

That's what I thought!  :o How the f*** do you forget to fit a tensioner? Surely the slack in the belt would've given them a clue that they'd forgotten something.

yup!!

bought the car about 6 weeks ago so wanted to get a major service plus cambelt (inc tensioner and guides).  kept confirming with them that I wanted the tensioner and guides (not just the belt).  Picked it up after the works and asked if they had fitted everything.  the guy looked a bit sheepish and said, we fitted the kit we were given.  I asked what was in the kit and he said er- just a belt!!

So I had them get a new full kit and refit it for free.  Checked it before and after to confirm it was done.  Wouldn't mind but its not a dodgy backstreet job, actually an AA service centre!!

So, I wouldn't be overly surprised if they have buggered up the filter as well.  As I kept saying to them, it wasn't leaking before the service.

They had left the originals in, it wasn't running with none in place. :)

What!!!  :o :o :o Numptys it's the tensioners that usually fail and cause the valves and pistons to meet in cafe cylinder for a tea party NOT THE BLOODY BELT!!! >:(

Wonder if they had a bit of trouble getting the cap off and loosened the whole filter housing?
Happened to me when I changed mine, but I had the sense to remove it and refit properly, maybe they "forgot" like they "forgot" the cambelt tensioners.
