aux belt
« on: 27 July 2007, 12:25:51 »

Guys

I've had the timing belt/tensioners etc replaced approx 2 weeks ago and since then the aux belt (or something driven by it) have developed a squeek.  The belt was originally changed approx 5 weeks ago, and a new water pump installed, unfortunately they did not change teh tensioners etc so had to re-do the job.  It is since then that the squeek has developed.

Is there a chance that the garage has buggered up yet another thing or could this be a coincidence.  I have had a look at the belt itself and it appears in a fairly good condition.

Out of curiosity, what is driven by the aux belt?

Cheers

By the way, cheers for all the input on the oil filter issue, they had indeed not installed the cap correctly.  Needless to say I will not be using teh garage again..

i dont know much about engines but what i do know is you should take it back to the garage if it is definately the belt causing the squeaking, and they should do something about it at no cost to you since its been on for so little time

aux belt drives PAS, A/C, water pump, and alternator.

Some pattern aux belts appear to be a little short, which would put additional strain on some components.  aux tensioner pulley could also be noisy.

is this something that I can keep an eye on for a while to see if it gets worse or do i need to fix problem asap?  ie:- Could it lead to major engine damage?

Without hearing, impossible to say. However, all new noises warrant further investigation...

I had similar sounding problem when I installed a new aux belt (Autovaux supplied).  Caused the aux belt pulley to squeal when starting from cold (due to either belt or pulley being cold I assume).    I put the old belt back on and the squealing stopped (it was only 30k old I had discovered)

Obviously the old belt will likely have stretched a bit in its lifetime and maybe the new belt is revealing worn (or dry) pulley bearings, or maybe its too short...

Having said that, your problem may be different, and if it is cambelt/tensioner related it needs sorting urgently.

Cheers,

Ian

I think i remember someone on here saying that if you put your Aux Belt back on the opposite way around than you took it off it makes a noise, not sure if it was a squeaking noise though to be honest  :-?
