Dead stuck on timing belt!!!!!

Got the belt on upto the crank turn point. Started to turn crank and it turned but the cams didnt turn. Sounded like the belt was slipping around the crank. Now I can't turn the crank at all  :'( :'(

If you were turning the crank and the cams were not turning is sounds to me as though you now have pistons hard up to open valves. I hope you haven't tried to force the crank round. You should if you're careful be able to turn the crank back to were you started, and have another attempt at lacing the cam belt up around all the pulleys.

We have determined by MSN that the cams and crank are now all over the shop.

Next step, is to carefully get them all back locked into correct positions

Then get the belt re-fitted, keeping crank locked at all times so it can't slip when tensioning etc...

When this is done, Before cranking by hand, just check there is no abnormal slack anywhere on the cambelt..

bit more detail / more words would help.

Were you turning the crank clockwise?
Did the cams move at all / will the cam-locks go back in?

Post more detail and we will try to help but in the meantime do not turn the crank further, you risk bending valves!!

Well, how pi**ed off am I? I did everything by the book, checked and checked again. I didn't force the crank, it just reached a point and wouldn't turn, that's when I shouted help to James.

Now have the belt off again and have had to leave it for the night. I think I'll have to get someone to take it from here as this has knocked my confidence big time.

  Hi,
     I've just done my Cambelt, not without problems i might add but with Marks help managed to sort it out and get it done.

 Having done it, although not making me an expert does give you the benefit of the experience and not to trying to sound critical, did you remove the Cam locking tools before you tried to turn the crank!

 Sounds daft i know but it's the simply things you think of least :-?.

     Sorry if this not the cause and no offence meant :y.

Removing the camlocks before turning was the first thing I asked ;)

As said, I'm likely to be in your area of Sunny Scooootlnd on Monday, so we'll chat further...

Just don't force anything in the meantime :y

If I manually move the cams with the tx50, how much resistance should there be? I don't want to force anything. Bearing in mind that the crank is no longer at TDC.

how far off tdc is it?

I'm thinking cams need to go half this distance, then slap a belt on to get it all safely back to tdc, and redo.  Before attempting, get this confirmed by one of the experts here first...

Crank was TDC when I started to turn. I would say that it turned 45 deg without the cams turning, so 45 degs off TDC. I attempted to adjust cam 1 manually, but it kept springing back. Every cam is way off timing marks now and all cams are at different positions  :-/

As an aside, when moving cam pulleys, you need to use a little tommy/breaker bar, not a ratchet...

Does that signify that they are hard to move and need a bit of force?

No it just means the cams when past a certain point will spin and a ratchet wont stop them where as a T bar will :y

IIRC the crankshaft needs to be at 4oclock before the cams can realigned safely but again I would wait for the experts just to make sure :y
