Yes its a 2.2 and as i dont have a manual yet, the new ones by Haynes are just service manuals so i would like to get a factory copy iy anyone knows of any available. So i am not 100% sure it was i am sure i read in my hand book the rear suspension goes up and down to compensate for the number of people sat there. Again at first i thought manifold leak but i have taken the sheilds of the manifold and cannot for the life of me find any leak cheers Tony
Hi Tony
I have just had my exhaust manifold gasket replaced on my 2.2. The manifold (fortunately) had not cracked, but the gasket WAS blowing on number 1 - I did the same as you, took the shield off and had a look myself but could not see any leaks but because the manifold had not cracked there was nothing to 'see' so to speak, but I could 'hear' it from number 1. When starting from cold I could hear it for approx 30 secs then goes as soon as the engine warms up.
My old manifold gasket was 'weird' in the fact that it was made of five metal 'layers' - seemed to make a thickness up of around 5mm!! The modified gasket was only made of three layers and was different in other ways. Once the old gasket was removed, you could definately see where it had been blowing on number 1.
Have another look (and listen!) Tony or get a trustworthy good mechanic to have a look. This is quite a common problem (I am sure the other OOF members will agree!). A word of warning though - if you do need to replace the gasket, you WILL get at least ONE snapped stud unless you are VERY lucky (sods law always thinks otherwise) - I had one snap right a the front near number 1 - really awkward but managed to do it!!
