Oil leak & knocking
« on: 13 August 2007, 11:15:25 »

In the absence of my usual oracle of knowledge  ;), hopefully you guys can help....

A couple of problems on my 1999 2.5 V6 CDX manual saloon:

1) Seems to be spewing oil out at quite a rate (approx 1l in 1-2 weeks).  Plenty of oil on the horizontal plate at the bottom of the front of the engine, and running around the sump.  Can't pinpoint where it's coming from but both cam cover gaskets have been renewed (approx 12 months ago) and there is no tell-tale burning smell.  there's a sensor at the front o/s bottom of the block - could it be coming from there?

2) There is a knock from the o/s when going over pot-holes, bumpy roads etc.  Checked all the obvious suspension mounts & linkages and the exhaust -nothing seems amiss.  Had new front wishbones earlier this year so probably (hopefully   :-?) not them.

Any clues??

Clean off all the oil and degrease with traffic film remover or gunk / jizer. Should be easier to see where its leaking from. The sensor is the oil pressure sensor, its a possible source of leak either from its sealing washer or, occasionally, they fail internally and oil escapes through the connector.

Assuming you-know-who did the camcover gaskets then the breathers etc will be OK so it must be the oil pressure sensor or the crankshaft fron seal.

Knock is likely to be the droplink from the antiroll bar to strut. Were these replaced at the same time as the wishbones?

Yep - my own resident grease monkey did the gaskets  ;D...(good job he's not about!)

Drop links were not changed, but visually they look OK - how's best to check?

Would the failure of the pressure switch give an EM error cos the light isn't on?

I will clean it up and monitor it.  Anywhere else I should check whilst I'm in there swabbing the decks?  Is crankshaft front seal a big job??

Clean the engine to locate the leak, though the sensor is probably most likely. Won't bring on any EM light.

The droplinks are cheap enough, just get him to change them (about a tenner each, so if you remove them to investigate, makes sense to just replace).

Marvellous - thanks for the advice guys.  I'm sure I can do the droplinks myself with a littl guidance and as long as the oil leak is not catastrophic then it's good news  :) (apart from for my driveway....)

Not an Omega owner without some oil stains on drives  :P

I tried pouring a load of oil on Mark's driveway last year, but Mr Bloody Perfect has a flash drive that you can just wash  >:(  ;)  ;D

No oil stains on my drive unless Laidback has visited recently.

Actually, the trick seems to be to leave your project car on Marks drive until all the leaks are fixed and all the old oil has been cleand off. Then, and only then, do you take it home.
Works for me. ;D
Also avoids having to explain to the missis why I have bought another Omega that doesnt work.

I will have to test his teflon driveway with my spit - that puts the Exxon Valdez to shame!

maybe that would get sorted in double quick time!!!
