Ok, does anyone know how quickly this can be done?

I am talking about removing a private plate, and replacing with the original registration.

If you go to a DVLA office, can the whole thing be done there, or is it more long winded (this is a government dept after all) than that?

i took a plate off my old cav turbo a year or so back and it took about 10 days iirc.

went in To the DVLA office, filled out the forms etc, gave them my log book, and mot, they then do their thing and when you go back in you take your tax disc, and they give you a replacement disc and new log book and mot.

Quickest I have managed is 3 days.....

I think I had to pay a few quid extra and had to personally return to uplift, rather than them post the docs/new tax discs out.

It is quite quick, but unless its changed from last year, cant be done there and then..

mine was 5 days to retain from my corsa, but retaining and transfering straight to a fresh vehicle shouldnt be any different

you only have to wait for your tax disc to be able to legally drive on the corresponding plates, then your documents can follow shortly, but dont forget to tell the insurance company!!

a mate of mine searched high and low for his insurance documents one day only to realise not only did he never have them, but he'd actually forgot to tell his insurance company he'd changed his plate over... 9 months before!!!

I've changed mine a few times and not had any problems getting it done same day at the DVLA office.

Trick is to make it easy for them...

 - Take all paperwork for both vehicles - i.e. donor vehicle and new vehicle. This includes tax disks, insurance certificates, MOT certificate, grannies death certificate, 42nd cousin twice removed birth certificate etc.. honestly anything at all to do with the car.

 - Don't go on a Monday or a Friday, or at the beginning or end of a month - these are really busy times - also avoid busy periods like lunch hours etc. Otherwise they will not have time to process your transfer application while you wait.

 - Do some research on the DVLA website, know what forms you will need and download them and fill them in in advance if possible.

well when I went to the office in Maidstone it was clearly signed that you CANNOT transfer it there and then, as of last year (september-ish I think). When I asked apparently this was due to dealers taking in several transfers which then took a long time to complete, in the mean time other people who'd come in for simpler tasks (eg tax disc renewal) would be kept waiting.

Whilst you can hand in the paperwork and they'll check all the required info is there, it's sit back and wait ... however I seem to remember it was pretty quick - less than a week ...

Just to let you all know that removing the reg plate from one vehicle to another take's upto 10 days for you to recieve all documentation back to yourself with the reg back to original. The cost of this is £105, this includes the documentation fee and transfer fee. I was going to do this  but keep the number on retention. I was told by one person at DVLA in swansea £25 then I was told by the local office in Reading £105 to put on retention, So I lost the plate as I did not have the money to do it. I worked bloody hard for the private plate worked 10 years on the taxis to get it and then had to give it up in a matter of second's I was non to pleased. I was   and also   and I

it's £105 to put a numberplate on retention for a year, this fee is inclusive of the price of transfer onto the next vehicle whenever you so choose, if you dont put it on a car within that year, you need to pay an extra £25 to keep it on retention for another year, but you dont have to pay another £80

This is correct at time of going to press. Yeah I know but I was told that it was just £25 to put on retention even my wife was told that as well!!! Getting duff information thats what the problem was.

so basically they didnt bother to tell you to include the £80 transfer fee... sods!!

I had a good look into it before i even bought my plate

did you know that if you retain a private plate, your car is not guaranteed to recieve its original registration back, but possibly another of same reg year
