Started up my Omega this morning and was greeted by a horrible rattling from underneath (sounded like marbles rattling in a tin!!) >:

Quick scrabble on the floor and it sounds like it is coming from the middle section of the exhaust, near the cat.  Exhaust still looks good and from what I can see.

The noise disappeared once the car was warm.  I am hoping that this in not the cat!!

Any ideas anyone???

baffles probably collapsed.i would part the centre box from cat then start it up,it will sound loud but tell you wether it is the cat or middle box.

AA - I did try it again later (when cold again) and I did notice that the engine was idling higher than normal

Yes they are a chain

If its a 2.2 petrol.....then its a belt.....cambelt kit to be fitted every 40k   along with water pump imo

Yes, firing on all cylinders, but I have noticed of late that cold starting although idle is constant, feels slightly 'lumpy'.  Performance is also recently been a bit 'flat'.  All breathers and DBW throttle valve clean.  I was waiting to take to MDTM when he returns from holiday for him to have a look at it then this happens!!!

Nope.

All Omega Petrols are belts, and have 40k/4yr life.

Had another check today and got a couple of expert opinions - now 99% sure it IS the cat!!!!

This has probably been caused by driving through recent floodwaters, the water cooling the outer casing quickly hence 'crushing' the outer edge of the expanded ceramic monolith causing fracture!!

So, a couple of questions before I get it fixed:

1)  Am I best to get a genuine GM replacement OR is a pattern equivalent as good (these seem to range from about £100+ VAT on the net).  If the GM original is the way to go, how much are these on TC?

2)  Could I use a secondhand one off a scrapper (which would save me money) or is this false economy?

3)  Is the cat part of the front pipe or is it a separate bit?

Don't trust many of the 'fast fit' outlets so would rather get my own parts, and have a good mate who can fit it!

Any advice/help would be greatly received!!

Having used an aftermarket CAT on my 2.0l last year I would recommend a genuine VX. This exhaust had made my car sound rough and not its previous quiet graceful self. The one I fitted was made by Bosal which I beleive a number of garages and parts suppliers use. Stick to genuine.
