Knocking noise from front wheels? ? ?
« on: 22 August 2007, 16:07:49 »

Right then,

I recently fitted new front wishbones (torqued with wheels and vehicle flat at normal ride height), new front struts, springs, tyres and all set up by Wheels In Motion.

However with every bump no matter how small, I get a 'metal on metal' knock from both front corners.

I havent had a chance to lift the car up yet, but strut tops and wheel bolts are all ok, any ideas folks?

Thanks in advance :y

normal culprit is the anti roll bar drop links which is roughly £20 and 20 min fix for both sides.....   :y

Yep, I'll second that. A clonking sound, even over the slightest ripple. I'm gonna do mine 2nite !!

Well just had the front wheels off and checked the torque on all suspension bits and they're fine.

No sign of split rubbers or free play in drop links or track rod ends....I put a jack under the wishbones to take tension of drop links and couldnt feel any free play :-/ :-/

But the 13mm pins on the calipers that secure the pads were a bit loose....

The noise is quieter but still there

Tempted to remove drop links and drive round the block and see if noise goes

No great potential harm in removing them then driving but -- 1) remove them completely at both ends, not just one.  The now free rod can catch wires, brake pipes etc etc and add to potential expense and 2) Remember they are there for a purpose.  They reduce body roll and so the handling of the car will be less than spot on.

From memory, 17mm open end spanner for the inner section to stop rotation and an 18 or 19mm ring or socket depending on make already fitted, for the nut.

Droplinks are likely.  So cheap (£20 a pair from ebay), and the hassle getting them off, just change them ;)

You wont see any play in them until you take them off anyway.

The play is in and out on the ball joint, normally, rather tha an up and down, if you follow.  Once removed, they will pull out and you will feel the free play.

ps - by remove both ends to test, I was meaning to remove both bolts on each side of the car, removing both bars from the car completely.  (Just to avoid confusion and a possible law suit, you understand.....  :D )

Did mine last..well, I started to do them. Bolts were so corroded it just wasn't happening. Gave 'em a good oiling and I'll try again later.

Last night went from bad to worse.  I have the use of my mates garage and I'd moved a customers SLK Merc out to get my car in. When I went to move the Merc back in the darned thing had locked itself...with the keys inside under the drivers seat....AAGH !!!   Apparently it's done it to my mate as well.  It locks itself after 5 mins.

If they are that bad, simply hacksaw the bu**ers off.  They are being replaced with new so no need to bust a gut.....   ;)
