Kerb Weight / Gross Weight?
« on: 13 September 2007, 11:45:57 »

Hi,

What is kerb weight and gross weight?

Is Gross weight the total weight of the car as it sits parked up on the road?

If so what is kerb weight?

 :)

Depends who you talk to !! as both are often misused and misquoted !!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curb_weight

The legal limits are now as per your VIN plate

http://www.btinternet.com/~madmole/Reference/VinPlate.html

and are GVW and GTM ... the maximum allowable for the car and the car+trailer

"Gross" means "total" .. so gross weight at any time is what it will read on the scales at that moment.. Max GVW and GTM are "never exceed" limits.

Kerb weight definitions vary from maker to maker, which is why they are no longer used.

This is confusing. So if a brand new omega was put on the scales what would it way ? , would it be the gross weight quoted in the manual?

MGW or Max Gross Weight is whats quoted on the plate on the B pillar.  Thats the weight of the vehicle with all its load - full boot, 5 adults, luggage and pack of Werthers - stood on the scales.   You also have permitted front axle, rear axle and train weight.  Thats the MGW plus the caravan and contents on the rear.

Kerb weight is generally the standard unladen weight of the vehicle, ie empty of load but with all fluids etc topped up including fuel tank.

The numerical difference that is MGW minus kerb weight gives the max load car can carry which is full boot, 5 adults lugg........ etc.
