Brake squeal
« on: 12 September 2007, 18:16:51 »

Hello,

My brakes were squealing and I also found the advisories for my last MOT (before I got the car) which said the discs and pads were getting on a bit. I got the front brakes and pads changed a week ago and the brakes have started squealing again. Is this just part of the bedding in process and it stops after a while or was something not done right?
Thanks!
Andy

Hello Mambafia, If you have a small amount of copper based grease applied to the back of the brake pads it should help remove and more importantly quieten your squealy brakes. This is not always done as part of a brake pad change so this problem does occur frequently. By the back of the brake pads i mean the non friction side(not the part that touches the brake disc.). In some cases anti-squeal shims can be bought from main dealer but sometimes are already incorporated in genuine dealer brake pads. Hope this might be of some help to you.

Hi mate, have you fitted gen vx pads if you have are they fitted correctly  as some have direction arrows on the backing plate,it not gen vx then you have to file the leading edge of the pad to stop the pads squeeling.

Regards Gary.

As a sidenote, Halfrauds pads are also chamfered.

Thanks for all your replies, I have no idea if they are VX pads or not, I'll ask the garage. They also fitted new sensors and charged me for them even though I have a GLS which doesn't give me any info on the state of them  :(

I wouldn't have the confidence to do brakes myself - I'd hate to get something like that wrong!

tunnie - I meant I thought that facelift only had one sensor (near side?), whereas pre facelift had them on both sides - obviously assuming the right spec of car to have them at all.  But I may be wrong - never had a Fl

I had this problem only last month had disks and pads all round.. needed to re mortage to foot the bill... straight away there was ear pearcing squealing before I had even got home,, normally I DIY but with one thing an another meant  had to get greasy joe to do it at the local garage, I returned following day and the guy said this sometimes happens with abspestos being taken out of brake pads and that the compound was probably too hard,, they changed them free of charge (should think so with the original price !!!) and they also installed pads with chamfered edges, and touch wood since then no problems... sweet as a nut...

might be worth speaking to the garage that did the work !!!

Im fairly certain the GLS still has a sensor.....except it doesnt tell you on the mid (coz there isnt one)
Theres a warning light for the pads below the clock/radio display.
