2.5 TD won't STOP!!!
« on: 17 September 2007, 21:28:08 »

Just back from a trip to Spain with the 2000 TD. On the way down we stopped near Biscarosse for lunch - only the car had other ideas - on turning the key off the engine just kept running - even removing the key had no effect & I could happily rev the engine on the throttle with the key out! I stalled the engine this time - it did it afterwards, but I found that by pressing the brake pedal after turning off the engine would reliably stop. No drain on the battery overnight - so that wasn't an issue.

Anyone seen this before? I'm thinking it could be linked to the lumpy slow running that I've got - I have a new injector pump waiting for me to fit it - hopefully this'll cure everything (got to be optimistic  ;)).

I would be checking the fuel shut off valve in the side of the pump, sounds like its sticking.

As it is diesel, you need to cut of the fuel, not ignition.

If it is running on its own it may be running on the engine oil, not fuel, so check the sump oil level to make sure it is not too high. What's the mileage on the car, is the engine worn?

I suspected the fuel cut off valve, but can't work out why applying the brake affects it.
The car has only done 130k kms (80k miles), so I don't expect engine wear - it uses about as much oil as my old one (one top-up between each 4.5k mile service interval which seems normal for this engine). As the engine runs "normally" with the key out, I'm sure it's not running on engine oil - that wouldnt respond cleanly to throttle position changes.

I think the single wire going to top of pump is fuel cut off. Check this is still secured properly.
