hello

i've just had the cam belt and plugs changed as part of the 4year service (reluctantly by the garage under the terms of the prepaid service regime) on my 2.2 53 plate.

I am sure the car is idling and sounding differently now and i was not really happy with the rest of the works anyway: could anyone take a quite recording of their 2.2 idling normally and post (that must be possible?) here so i can compare?

dont have a 2.2 to record sound but what speed is the idle, maybe timing is a tad out...

If unhappy - your a paying customer - straight back to them, what are the other issues your unhappy with?

ive just bought my second omega and its booked in for a cambelt change at vh themselfs,my last omega was the elite again had the belt changed at vh and on picking it up it sounded different hard to explain the noise but i too wasnt happy.

Cam timing is the most likely culprit. Can you describe how it's changed? Smoother, lumpier? Louder / quieter? Any rattles or other noises? Performance worse / better?

It really shouldn't have made any difference so timing was out either before or after, or they've disturbed something else.

I'd take it back to them and ask them to check their work.

I've not worked on a 2.2 or even seen one but I get the impression that it's similar to the other twin cam Vx engines ie 1.6 Astra. When I did my wife's it really couldn't have been any easier. The cam locking tool was a few quid to buy and the whole job took less than an hour. I'd imagine car with proper north/south engine layouts would be as easy.
Take the car back.

If you're not careful, it's easy to get the crank a tooth out, so always needs to be checked after rotating by hand.

Also make sure there are no air leaks, and the vac pipes are all connected securely.
