Hi All
Please excuse me for my total lack of knowledge on the Omega as it is the first one I have owned.
I have been experiencing one or two problems with my autobox changing up the gears i.e it will only
change from second to third if I back my foot off slightly. Also if you slow down for lights or a round about
sometimes when you put your foot down to speed up again it appears not to be in any gear but then suddenly
drops into gear with a thump and you are off again. It does this more so when it is cold once it warms up a bit
it is better. Anyway after scanning through the general help I find the thread advising auto box fluid and filter
change for similar problems so I print off the proceedure. I am now being told by a mechanic that this is not possible
on my car as it has a german gearbox? that is sealed with no removeable sumps or filler plug? Is this correct or possible?
it is a 1998 2.5 TD elite saloon. I believe the people on here have possibly more experience and should be able to advise.
Cant get under car myself at present so do not know if this chap is taking theP***

I do not know of these things (got a manual box, thankfully....   ) but if you read here that something is possible or doable on an autobox then I would stick my neck out and say that it is.....

2.5 TD wil have fitted an Identical box to the petrol models, with a different bellhousing. Most likely AR25 on that age of car. What is the mileage? The TD will often kill an AR25 - anytime after 100k miles and you're usually on borrowed time!

If this is the case, it's a reasonably easy job to change, but replace it with an AR35 box, much stronger.

First port of call is to change the ATF, and the gearbox filter, and monior for an improvement. This is totally do-able, but involves dropping both sumps on the gearbox while they're full of oil. An easy, but V messy, job!

Follow Mark's guide in the maintenance section for refilling, and checking level.

It's EASY to do DIY, if you don't mind getting messy!

May I also add - when you remove the sumps to do the ATF change - check, especially in the front smaller sump, for the remains of a "thrust" washer. If you find this, then your box needs either changing, or repairing.

Auto gearbox rebuild  isn't as bad a job as one would imagine - there is an excellent guide in the maintenance section.

This worries me, my 1995 TD is on 175,000, I have no idea if it's ever been changed!

1998 may just be possible that the gearbox ecu is upgradeable the ecu was changed about this time - "theboy" will give a definitive answer to this one. If so then needs tech2 to upgrade it

Change the box fluid is always the first port of call and its dex3 always
For your mechanics info it has a fill /check level pump to the drivers side and use info from  previous post about changing fluid and filter. get filter and gaskets from www.jpat.co.uk good quality and reasonably priced

Thanks to everyone for your help.
Think I will tackle the gearbox fluid and filter change myself.
Sounds safest thing to do. Car has covered 172000 but runs very well
apart from the box problem. Just completed a 1500 mile round trip around
Southern Ireland and it never missed a beat!
Thats what probably has finished the box off.
Will let you know how I get on.

Try the fluid change first, but the tractors do eat AR25 boxes.  BTW, as others have said, your mech is a prat.
