changing thermostat on the mv6

does anyone have and tips or a DIY how to change the thermostat iv changed the waterpump but the gasket on the thermostat is leaking and i have no idea how to take it off

(i took off the intake manifold  but i cant access it)

It''s a bit of a fiddly job, but do-able.

Plenum off, inlet off, also take off the lower part of the inlet manifold, held on by about 12 E12 bolts.

You then need to undo the front coolant transfer pipe retaining bolt on the left hand cylinder head, and work that pipe free. It looks tight, but there IS clearance for it to come out, once the bolt is removed. It may need twisting in the stat housing, and you may have to move the dipstick tube out of the way.

Once that is done, a couple of E10 bolts and the stat housing is off.

Given the work involved to get to it, I would change the whole thermostat while you're in there, if the car's any good. It uses an O ring, rather than a gasket.

This is obviously a good time to check there are no leaks around the oil cooler plate, and coolant bridge seals at the back of the "V".

Re-assembly is the same as removal, but in reverse order. Hope this helps, welcome to the forum :)

Slightly off-topic reply, but I it think perfectly illustrates how some simple jobs on the GM V6 engines have been made much harder than they could have been, made even worse with the longitudinal engine installation:

I used to drive a Rover 620 Ti (petrol turbo model, 200bhp, yada yada), which for some reason required a new thermostat every 8 months or so.  If left unchanged, engine would start to run too cold, and would start to idle at ever increasing revs, going from 750 RPM to 2000 RPM over a period of weeks (2000 RPM = 174 lb ft of torque in the T16 engine).

This wasn't a big problem, because thermostat and gasket only cost £7 from Rover, and took only 10 minutes to change... sometimes I changed it in the rain before driving to work, sometimes during my 15 minute break from work, once even at 9pm in the dark on a January evening.

Moral of the story?  Imagine if an Omega developed that kind of fault and you had to change the thermostat in a hurry...!

biggest issue i encountered was the stat housing being solid stuck onto the coolant transfer pipe....otherwise its straightforward enough  ;)

I take it you haven't had the "pleasure" of changing the coil pack?  Buried right at the back of the engine, up against the bulkhead.

yah i fugured out how to unbolt the thermostat but i cant get near those bolts on the side of the motor ... do i have to remove power stering pump to get to them  ? if not then how from top bottom part of the engine ?!

that may be the Ba$tard bold as some on here refer to it, no need to remove just push it out he way...pic would be good to pinpoint what your referring too  :)
