Cruise control not working ????
« on: 03 October 2007, 11:14:52 »

Hi, I have only just got this car, the guy i bought it from said the cruise control just stopped working one day, I have checked the fuse, which is the same one as the reverse lights, and they work, so it's not that.

Any ideas anyone?????

Thanks.

Not sure, as have the same problem myself...

When I asked a little while ago, Mark said that the rear lights can make it play up, so I tried replacing all the bulbs with new from VX on mine to no avail, but also a dodgy brake pedal switch can cause it to never come on... so may be worth spending a few ££ like I am and replacing it for a new one from VX.  Easy enough job to do, just fiddle given  the access...

First of all check that the cruise actuator cable is still attached.  twist it off from the top of the actuator and check that the canvas strip (yellow) in my case is still attached to the end of the actuator cable.  Sometimes these break.  If this is the case then look for a scap actuator - new ones are expensive

Second, check the actuator cable is connected at the throttle - this should be obvious as a seperate cable from the throttle cable.

If these are o.k. then it is down to checking the clutch switch (if fitted), brake switch and the cruise stalk.  You can spend some time digging about looking for these but there is an easier way.  If you unplug the cruise multiplug from the top of the actuator you should be able to check the volatages on each of the pins and measure the difference when each switch (brake, clutch or stalk switches are depressed.  See the post here for my readouts

 http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1170492943/15

You should be able to check that each switch works.  note that different models have slightly different configurations for the multiplug but the general principle is that you should be able to see what each switch is doing.

THe only other possible problem that you could have would be a failure of the speed signal to the unit - this is likely to be accompanies by a non-working  sppedometer

Good luck and lut us know how you get on

I have checked the first items, the yellow canvas is attached and still looking brand new, the other end is attached to the throttle with a black plastic clip.

Will have to wait till 2moro for the multimeter test, as its at home in the shed somewhere, will bring it to work and read it here 2moro.

Now a bit of info would not go amiss here, you are sounding confident with a mulimeter, i have new one i have not used yet, with a swith on the front with lots of different settings and a lcd screen, any idea which one, my last one had a needle which went up to 12v and a ac/dc switch.

Cheers, Mark.  :y :y

Hi Mark, Basically as the other chap said in his post, set the meter to read DC volts and some scale above 15V (prob 20V). Make sure the leads are plugged into the meter sockets for volts, because some, like my Fluke, have seperate sockets for current and if you connect a meter set to current across a voltage source like a car battery, then many Amps will flow, and probably blow up your meter!. Its OK, most meters are clearly labeled so this shouldn't be a problem.
Cheers Ken

If you want to play around with thing, I suggest you get a AA battery from say your remote control and try to measure the voltage.  You should get 1.5v.  The advantage of doing it this way is that if you connect your meter incorrectly the an alkaline batter probably cannot provide the current to blow your meter.  Trust me your car batter certainly can!

Here are the results then, are you sitting comfortably, then we'll begin.

A - 0v but 0v when O button on cruise stalk or brake pedal pressed
B - 0v but 0v when I pressed on cruise stalk
C - 0v but 0v when R pressed on cruise stalk
D +0.03v Mine is Auot
E earth
F - permenant +12v
G 0v but +12v when brake depressed

H- not tested as not sure where this goes or what it does
K - speed signal - not tested.

Hope this helps, thanks.  :y

o.k. looks like the cruise stalk is not doing anything, the auto box is not providing a postive feed either.  THink the autobox needs to be in drive to do this so I'd worry about that later.  first we need to figure out why the cruise stalk is not doing anything.

First check is to check that it is plugged in: there is a small multiplug under the steering cowling.  Let us know how you go on.  Next move may be to test power feed to the cruise stalk and to check exactly how it is working(again with your meter)

Brilliant! Good news  Glad you've got it going.

I could not believe how useful cruise was until I installed it on mine
