By the way, Mr muscle is not good at cleaning soot etc out, paint stripper is the answer.

You also need to be careful with blanking the EGR on later cars as it can be detected by the MAF....it might be this thats causing the further problem.

Did also try paint stripper as well. Nice clean valve seat inside egr. Have reseated Maf connector.

Just had the codes read yet again by my friendly local dealer, Mike Dundee will know the one I mean.

Fault code gives Egr and too rich exhaust. This is after putting a blanking plate between egr and base.

Dealer suggested putting a small 15 mm hole underneath where egr valve and blanking plate is and that should then get the rich readings down to working figures.

Friendly dealer let me look at report back from VX about another motor with over richness after blanking off Egr. Would appear I made too good a job of blanking off the valve.  I cut a hole in my home made plate, 10mm, immediately below where the plunger on the Egr fits. Put Egr and modified plate back onto engine. Took car for a run of about 20 miles. No check lights came up, performance a lot better than before and gear changing smooth. Starts on the button and smooth tick over.

Just waiting for the 'frosty weather' to see if car starts in the cold, will keep you posted.

Another bit of information I found was on some Astra's they have been having problems with egr's and VX are recommending taking the Egr off. Putting a plate in the space, removing Egr completely and a software mod is coming out for the removal so faults do not keep popping up.
