Auto to manual
« on: 05 October 2007, 18:03:42 »

Hi all,
I have a 98 mini facelift mv6 auto and have just bought a 96 2.5 v6 cd manual for spares . I'm toying with the idea of a  manual conversion to the mv6. Anyone done this before ? what are the  things to beware of if any? All advice greatfully received.

Yes, been done.  No real gotchas AFAIK, though the ECUs could ideally do with a chat with a Tech2, specifically: Motronic, MID, ABS.

You could do with a AR 35 gear box though to go with your 3.0 engine, the AR 25 from the 2.5 won't last very long - too  much grunt.

The R25 from the 2.5 isn't as strong as the R28 fitted to the 3.0 as standard, but it'll probably still last 10 times longer than any of the automatics before falling to bits ;)

Oh and apparently it's all pretty much a straight swap, so if you have the tools/ramps there shouldn't be any hitches seeing as you have a complete donor car. Pedal box, clutch hydraulics, clutch, flywheel, gearbox, gearstick, centre console bits n pieces. I know someone who's done it over the course of a weekend, he's a member on here so might chime in.

The only problem he had was that the MID showed "automatic gearbox" on the display every time the ignition is switched on -- this can be solved by shorting out a wire on the connector, it's detailed on here somewhere.

Good luck, it'll be well worth it if you manage it. My mate said the car was transformed after doing his.
