2.5 td HELP REQUIRED
« on: 07 October 2007, 19:19:23 »

Hi everybody im new to this site, ive just purchased an omega 2.5 td [bmw engine] manual estate r reg 1998. The problems i have are as follows .[1] the car takes a while to start in the morning it turns the engine over quickly, but it takes about 30 seconds to get the car to fire up [this is with giving the car plenty of time for the glow  plugs to work]. [2] the car is very slow when setting off  through the gears [even stalling on set off if you dont get enough revs on] although if you rev it long enough through gears, lets say second for example the turbo kicks in and it pins you back in the seat[very powerful].[3]when driving around town on A roads etc around 30 to 50 mph the engine management light comes on and the power drops for 1 or 2 seconds, but as soon as you let off the throttle the light goes out and the power comes back.I WOULD BE GRATEFULL FOR ANY ADVICE YOUR HELP IS MUCH APPRICIATED, CHEERS MICKY

Check Fuse 18.

Check fuel filter is full of diesel.

Does it smoke excessively?

With regard to the starting, try glowing 3 of 4 times in a row and see if it starts faster then, I had the same problem when i got my omega and i used to have to glow it 3 times to get it going.

If it starts after trying the above then its just the glow plugs that need replacing - quite a fun job (or not) and they aren't cheap either.

With the power problem, mine did the same too and it was the turbo actuator sticking every now and then, meant i lost all power and the EML would flash on. Lubed it up and it didn't stick any more!!

Hope you get it sorted.

I thought it was quite easy. Whip the intake off (almost a daily job in the TB household  >:(), take the wires off, and easy from there.

Lol! That is probably where I went wrong then!

I did it with the intake manifold on (thinking I would be saving time) but it made access a right pain in the backside. I shall note that for future recommendations! Thanks!

I have the same problem but mine seems to be more so when fuel tank is 1/4 full or less. Makes no difference whether 1st thing in the morning or after a blast along the M4.
From what the all-knowing ones here say I think my problem is the pump, as it makes no difference how many times I pre-heat the glow-plugs before firing up.
On my previous 2.5td I had a cold start issue and after changing the glow-plugs the car was transformed. Started on the button no matter how cold it was.
As Platy says, try glowing it a 2-3 times and if she fires up better that way then a new set of glow-plugs should solve that part of your query.

If it only happens when low on fuel, lift pump not working. Check fuel filter, I bet its not full ;)

Check fuse 18.

Ive just had similer problems and found that the multi plug from the diesil pump was not screwed in propely, locked it in and its running great now, so it`s worth a check to see if it`s conected right.
