« on: 22 October 2007, 19:34:31 »

i have what i beleive is a catastrophic failiure of the heater bypass valve on my 2.6 cdx.
can anyone tell me a. how to access the damn thing and b. how can i confirm that this is the problem and not a head gasket failiure!

Remove scuttle for access :)

Unlikely to be HG :)

Yeah.

If you take the wipers and scuttle off it can be done without taking the plenum off (although it is much easier with plenum off imo)

Not that hard to do , just a bit fiddly , and definitely grazed knuckles aplenty!  :o

presumably you are losing coolant?

You can just about shine a torch on it if you stand next to the drivers side wing.  It will likely look wet or if not you'll see brownish staining in the vicinity if its been leaking for any time.   Remember it may or not leak depending on whether you have AC on or off.

Wont be head gasket.
Most likely to be heater bypass valve but could be any of the hoses around back of engine, these sometimes split or wear through if not replaced properly following work in that area.
Leaks from coolant bridge, oil heat exchanger or thermostat seal tend to be slow weeps rather than larger leaks.
