engine replacement
« on: 06 October 2007, 20:12:56 »

hey, i was thinking about an engine replacement. could you put a Vectra VXR or even a Monaro engine or any VXR engine (Maybe even the gearbox) in an Omega. i know it would be expensive but would it work and how much would the performance change (0-60, top speed, bhp, etc). i would really like to know,
thanks,
Jamie

hi

i would think that putting a vectra engine in the omega would cause you loads of problems due to it being designed for Front wheel drive, and the engine is not at all reliable in the proper car anyway, the monaro on the other hand should not cause any problems except to the wallet as the cars are simular.
should make it pretty fast  :y

i should add that i have very very limited mechanical knowledge  ::)

the VXR and Monaro are basically english badged versions of the Holden HSV stuff from Aus. (given the Aus dollar to pound it's almost worth importing an HSV yourself!!!)

rather than looking for VXR or Monaro bits it would probably (IMHO) be cheaper to buy a complete LS1 or LS2 engine from the states (or any GM 350 chevy engine) which costs around £1500. problem would be the gearbox as most American cars use an auto.

try looking for someone breaking a manual Corvette, which should tick most boxes.

not sure how the rear axle and diff would handle the 400+ bhp and loads of torque.

that my 2 bob anyway...... :y

this was a conversation we were having with one of the members today, the general concensus was that anything can be done if you try hard enough, however did you know..........

The Monaro is wider than the Omega, check out the specs on both cars, this would mean that the engine could be a mammoth task.

The Vectra lump may work, which one were you looking at? V6 or 4cyl?

Most of the engines that have been in the Omega have been further developed and now sit in the vectra, the original V6's were designed for RWD and both the V6's and 4 cylinder engines are very reliable on the whole, however like everything in life there will be little fobles.

The Vectra V6's and the Omega V6's are the same blocks with minor changes for fore and aft/port starboard mounting, including different rocker covers....

The 2.8 is different though isn't it? Not sure turbo'd V6's would suit the Omega's character though

Does it matter if the omega is right hand drive and the engine has came out of a land hand drive?
Thanks,
Jamie

I believe a friend of mine's 2.0 estate has had a 2.0 Vectra engine fitted, prior to him aquiring it.

Last MOT it failed on the CAT, he had to fit a Vectra CAT to it.

I wouldn't think the engine itself will have any significant differences, although you sometimes find minor changes like a different shape exhaust manifold to clear the steering gear.

unfortunetly Monaro Engines will not fit the Omega without a lot of work  :'(

The Holden HSV range looks like UK Omega's.. BUT the Holden's are 4" wider.... hence if you try and put the windscreen from an Omega in a Holden, it will fall though.... same as the Monaro.

Getting hold of one is a problem though.... and getting any parts for one is an even bigger problem!

Vauxhall had to beg the help of ABS to get them parts for their own LC at the Heritage Centre!
