CID - explain please...
« on: 02 October 2007, 13:25:24 »

I've been searching through the forums and come across posts about getting the CID display from German eBay or having it fitted by dealers; prices quoted are between £250 and £1200.

Now, as I understand it, the CID offers sat nav and a prettier way of displaying the same information as on the MID. Is this correct?

If yes, why on earth do people pay such amounts to get the CID when the MID is not too bad looking and you can pick up probably a much better sat nav system (i.e. Tom Tom) for about £180 that you can remove from your car and plug into a computer to update?

Cheers,

Graham

this is probably more of a general chat thread, but i think people like the snob value of a colour display, but why they go for such high prices I really dont know!!

CID needs to be pared with the satnav radio as well, but i suppose in a nutshell you have summed it up.

When this was first released satnav was still an expensive option and even today people like the whole built in 'factory' look.

Personally if i could get one for reasonable money i would

I like the thought of not having to take your sat nav / hide it / worry about powering it from the cig lighter, but not enough to pay £500+ to have a CID.

Worth bearing in mind that sat navs have come a long way since the Omega went out of production. The money's better spent on a Tom Tom IMHO. Especially bearing in mind that you are stuck with the audio system that's included. I do, however, appreciate the convenience of having it integrated. I have often wondered about hacking out my MID and shoving a tom tom in there ;D

LIKE THE IDEA KEVIN OF THE TOM TOM IN PLACE OF THE MID BUT YOU NEED TO TOUCH THE SCREEN OF THE TOM TOM TO OPERATE IT.WOULD IT BE POSS TO FIT THE TOM TOM  IN THE HOLE NEXT TO THE RADIO. CURRENTLY A TC SWITCH AND BLANKING PLATE. :y :y

True. The MID's got a plastic cover over it, hasn't it?  >:(

Not something I'm really considering. Just thought it'd fit nicely.

These cost £500 as an optional option; when you consider that people were paying £30k for the car, I'm sure deals could have been made with Vauxhall to get it cheaper or free.

I prefer the Tomtom, only downside is the theft issue, charging and rubber suckers on windscreen.  Don't enjoy having to remove it every time I leave the car unattended.

I can say that the CID gives massive benefits over the GID.  For a start, you only get directional arrows with the GID.  The CID does give pictorial displays making it very clear which turn to take on, say, a roundabout.  I'd only pay £300 MAX for the CID and instalation costs though.  After that, not sure it's worth the extra!!   :y

Well i've got the CID in mine and my opinion is that it totally transforms the use of the Sat Nav if you compare it to the GID.
What I really like is the built in aspect, not having to remove your Nav every stop is a plus point, It is completely outclassed by todays Nav units but it does the job without any fuss.

I used to have an early Garmin unit that I'd used for driving around the outback in. I forgot to remove it from my car one night - the only time I'd ever done so. By the morning, not only had I lost it, and the mobile phone tucked into the glove box, but I also had to pay for repairs to the window/door, console and glovebox.

When the possibility came to fit a factory one to my current car, I ummed and ahhhhd for about a minute. When the car is parked, only an OOF expert would know it has one fitted, and then they'd know there's no point stealing it.

For me there was an additional bonus. My car didn't have the trip computer (Board Computer) or a sound system, so in effect I was killing three birds with one stone. Trip computer is very valuable when you're driving long distances.

The only downside for me is that the maps aren't very comprehensive where I travel in Europe (Southern Italy).

I am plotting a long term plan for my current miggy, one of the option could be a carputer in place of the stereo which would include sat nav and some sort of media player that would be controlled be a touch screen......

this would give me the best of both worlds, retain the on board comp and have a feature packed sat nav/audio system

pre-facelift???

If so, a TomTom One (NOT the XL) will fit perfectly in the space to the left of the radio ONLY IF you take the tomtom apart and do a custom-fit jobby...

I looked at a couple of very nice integrated units with pop-out screens. My only objection to these is that the screen covers up the ECC panel when extended, and its a little low from the field of view to keep looking down at whilst driving. If you don't mind that, I think they'd be a good choice.
