Heater / Blower
« on: 11 November 2007, 23:54:05 »

This is for facelift owners:

I don't know if the heater fan is blowing correctly, if the car is full, wife and kids, like the other day who had got a bit wet in the rain  ;D ;D ops  :-X the car started to steam up as expected, put the heater/front screen clear on to demist the screen, even after 20 minutes it had only cleared the bottom half of the screen.  I think that with the fan on full it is not blowing as hard as it should?  If I put the recycling on the fan blows as you would expect, plenty of power, but no use to demist.

The fan has always been like this, is it normal? should the fan not blow as hard as it does when recycle is on?  With the fan set at high (8 bars) it does work, but you only hear a slight noise, not the blast I would expect?

Any ideas,

Put the aircon on then press the demist front screen button, the fan should blow fast to clear the windscreen and side windows.
It doesn't really do much when you have it in eco mode, is that what you had it set to?

No, don't use the eco, I do have the CC on and press the front screen botton, I just think that the fan is not blowing hard enough  :( I don't use recycle to clear the screen, it is just that if I do press it, the fan "blasts" air out?

When was the pollen filter flast changed...?

Its sounds like classis clogged pollen filter symptoms, check also the scuttle area for water and blocked drains.

Also, I assume you have not loaded the drivers side rear cubby hole (saloon) in the boot or wheel well (estate) up with junk to much or you will block the cabin vents.

I guess it could also be a problem with the cabin air recirculation. A flap on the blower body opens to take air in from the cabin rather than from the outside through the pollen filter. It should only kick in when you enable the recirculation with the button. I'd have a play with the recirculation button when the climate control is working normally and see if you can hear the difference in airflow when you engage recirculation.

If you can't hear the airflow change when you switch on recirculation, could be that it's jammed in the recirculate mode, which will make a big difference to defrosting!

Also, check the scuttle drain on the passenger side is clear, as this could be leaking water into the cabin, or soaking the cabin air filter.

Thanks guys,

No sign of damp inside, will check the drains and scuttle area. Pollen filter? don't know when it was last changed but now on the list to do  :y cubby hole empty!

The recirculation button works fine, I can hear it open and close. (and the air blasts out)

Can some confirm that the air flow should be much stronger with recirculation on, which mine is, or should it be the same as "full fan" it is just that with normal CC on and fan set to full, it is what I would call "dismal" air flow?

Will report back on findings.  :y

My money is on a clogged pollen filter, air flow should be similar between re-circ and external.

This happened to mine last year, I couldn't understand why it wouldn't de-mist when it had always been so effective before.

No-one has mentioned it yet but it may be that your aircon system needs a gas recharge?  If your blower is still blowing out air but nothing is happening then the air may not be (air)conditioned.  If there isn't enought gas in the system the compressor doesn't activate and it blows out regular air.

I saw a link on this site somewhere that recommended these guys:

Hope it helps.

A can of R134a (like those from Halfords) did the trick for me.  :-[  Mine's freezing now if so required.  ;)

Yes! ...... I know the amount of gas should be measured by weight.
