black box at bottom of air intake. what is it?
« on: 08 November 2007, 19:44:53 »

hi, i have just changed my aux belt as the pulley killed itself and took the belt with it. when i took the air intake out there was a box attatched at the bottom with two vacum pipes in it,one of the oulets was snapped and superglued by the last owner and now its beyond repair. now my car wont start without revving and cuts out immediately. my question is what does the box do and is that why it wont start. (only one vacum pipe attatched at moment) also anyone got a cheap one going?

Is it not where the Lamda sensor lives?

Hi,
Not sure, it's physically attatched to the multiram air intake and is opposite the alternator on the left hand side at the front of the car. There are no electrical wires that I can see just the two vacuum pipes.

Its a vacuum tank for the multirams, only there on the later, circa minilift, cars.  Theres another behind the pollen filter for the climate control etc.

I aren't the best one to tell you mate, but I thought that if the Vac Tank (stores vacuum) was broken, or as you say a vac pipe has broken off you would have an air leak, which in turn would not allow your multi rams to work properly...... all that would do is not perform so well and less mpg......
Wouldn't have thought it would stop the car from starting!
Are you sure with the belt coming off it hasn't damaged something else?

Certainly would not help.  dependant on which pipe is broken creates an air leak which will affect running....

the belt broke on the way home from work and the engine was running fine. even when i had the rams out to check the belt it ran but as soon as i put it back together minus the pipe it would not start. no lights on in car when i rev it to run and i cant see ant other damage apart from where the pulley disintegrated. ill get one of the tanks and give it a try.

Block off the vac pipe as a short term measure.

the vacuum pipe being disconnected will make no difference to it starting, sounds like either something electrical left off or a bit of belt debris gone into the cambelt and jumped it a bit
